Why Alex McCarthy should be in the World Cup squad

Alex McCarthy has been a shining light in what has been a pretty dire season for us Royals fans. His performances have been fantastic and have confirmed his status as one of the best goalkeepers in the league. That said he is still a diamond in the rough with his kicking being an area to improve on. However, he is still young and as an understudy to Joe Hart and Ben Foster/Frazer Forster he would gain more valuable experience than an older player would. This would set him on the way to fulfilling the potential that Arsenal and Liverpool were interested in last season.

His performances in the 2012/13 season showed him to be one of the best keepers in the league with several top class games, notably that game against Liverpool. This highlighted the potential he holds to possibly be one of the best keepers in Europe. As bold a statement as it sounds he can seriously do this and the experience of a World Cup even as a third choice would be incredibly valuable. This is shown to work as it spurred Joe Hart on at the 2010 tournament where he acted as an understudy to Rob Green and David James. Roy Hodgson clearly understands his potential having taken him with the senior squad to the friendly in Rio last June. All things considered it could only be a good thing to take him to the tournament and considering his overall performances in this season and last he would be fully deserving of his place.
