Calling all Reading fans! Well, football fans in general! As some of you may know, I am in my final year of university studying Criminology, Criminal Justice and Social Policy. I was determined to get football into my studies at some point, so my dissertation is about how social and cultural factors affect football hooliganism. I’m comparing a few different teams; Cardiff City, Barnsley, Wolverhampton Wanderers and, of course, Reading, and trying to find out whether factors such as new stadia, location of the club, the local economy and being surrounded by so called ‘bigger’ clubs play any role in hooliganism. As part of my research, I am interested in hearing fans’ views on the topic. You don’t have to be an expert on the subject, or any of the teams above; I just need opinions and experiences (past and present) from others so I can gain a better understanding. I’ll be having discussions about experiences at home and away grounds, and the treatment of fans by opposition fans and figures of authority.
I’m trying to arrange an event on the evening of 28th November (Wednesday) at the conference centre within the Madejski complex to get a proper discussion going, but I obviously need participants! I’d like a mix of all kinds of people, I just need football fans! It doesn’t matter whether you’re male or female, whether you’ve been going to games for 1 year or 50 years, or if you go on your own, in a group of mates or with your family. I’d also like a few people who experienced match days at Elm Park as well as at the Mad Stad, or any match days at all during the 70s and 80s. The only thing that I insist is that you’re over 18 years of age because of ethics rules at my university. The whole thing will be recorded via dictaphone, and the discussions will never be made public.
I really need all the help I can get, so if you’re interested in taking part and helping out a student in need, please either get in contact via my twitter by direct message (@becka_ellen) with your name and contact email address, or drop me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please spread the word, this could be a really interesting and insightful discussion!
