Reading made one change with Wayne Bridge out for Stephen Kelly at left back, while Jobi McAnuff also made a return to the 18, coming back on the bench.
After a goalless first half, Hal Robson-Kanu grabbed Reading's opener with a great drive from 20-yards out that beat Barnsley keeper Jack Butland low down to his left.
But David Flitcroft's side had put in a decent display and were rewarded with a point when Chris O'Grady found space right on the edge of the box and slotted past McCarthy as Reading conceded just their third goal in the past six games.
While you'd obviously target three points from a game like this a point is still a point and with Reading earning 14 points from a possible 18 in the last six, they're comfortably ahead of the 2 points per game target that you need to hit to be in with a serious chance of winning the league.
As mentioned Dave will be along with a full write up later as well as the player ratings so stay tuned for those.
