Reading FC International Roundup - February 7

Eight Reading players earned full caps last night, with three of them playing a key part in a historic result for their national side. We recap joys in the Azteca and a long plane ride home for another.

Jamie Sabau

G McCleary, J McAnuff & A Mariappa

Mexico 0-0 Jamaica

Going into last night's match Mexico had won their previous 25 competitive games at the Azteca, with 19 straight wins in all competitions. In the pre-match betting the hosts were 2/11 to win but the bookies didn't count on a trio of in-form Royals to come along and spoil the party. Garath McCleary, Jobi McAnuff and Adrian Mariappa all started at the visitors held Mexico to a 0-0 draw.

McCleary performed well on his debut but McAnuff had a golden chance to give the Reggae Boyz a win, only to see his early effort crash against the post before missing the rebound with the goal gaping.

Even so it was a great result and puts them joint second after the first round of the final CONCACAF qualifiers, with the top three in the six team group progressing to Brazil.

Gorkss made the roughly 12,000 mile round trip with Latvia to face Japan only to see his side fall to a 3-0 defeat... ouch.

Pearce had to make do with being an unused substitute as the Republic beat Poland 2-0.

Young defender Shane Griffin played the full 90 minutes for the ROI's U19 side as they beat their Czech counterparts 2-1. The two sides will meet again this evening with fellow Royals defender Pierce Sweeney named in the squad.

J Henly

Netherlands U19 2-1 Scotland U19

Goalkeeper Henly 'played a part' for Scotland according to his Twitter account, although the Scottish FA haven't even published a match report so it's hard to know how much or how he played! Still, I can imagine the Netherlands' U19 team might be a bit good....

EDIT: Credit to @ReadingSportFan on twitter for spotting that Scotland's performance director Mark Wotte tweeted that Henly played 20 minutes.
