Reading slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Cardiff City this evening, with the damage well and truly done in the first half. Alex Pearce opened the scoring with an own goal from a Cardiff corner, the ball unkindly ricocheting off his boot to fly past the helpless Adam Federici. And it was Alex Pearce at fault again for the second goal, bringing down a Cardiff City player to give away a penalty and earn himself a red card. Peter Whittingham slotted home the resulting spot kick to put the Bluebirds 2-0 up and give the home side a commanding lead. Michael Hector managed to pull a goal back for the Royals in the 81st minute, firing home after a corner, but it was too little too late.
The defeat leaves Reading in 14th place on 21 points after 8 defeats in 12 and, with news earlier in the week that Samrit Bunditkitsada was flying in to discuss footballing matters with the board, Nigel Adkins could be looking over his shoulder nervously. One of the few positives tonight was the return of Garath McCleary, who got an extended run out after coming on for Simon Cox.
