McCarthy was overlooked in favour of regular number one Joe Hart, West Brom's Ben Foster, Norwich keeper John Ruddy and Cetic's Fraser Forster.
All of those four have been capped, although both Ruddy and Forster have made one appearance each but as squad regulars it wasn't overly surprising to see them named.
England have glut of good goalkeepers right now, with Jack Butland also knocking on the door and sadly a lack of regular Premier League playing time has probably cost Alex his place at this year's tournament. With that being said at just 24 years of age he's got plenty of time in front of him, so he'll get plenty of chances to feature in the future.
