Reading Player of the Month: January

A mixed bag of results in January, as we were dumped out of the cup by Brighton, and totally outplayed against Nottingham Forest, then rallied for three victories including our biggest at the Mad Stad, a 7-1 drubbing of Bolton Wanderers. But who was your Player of the Month? Here are the nominations...

Ben Hoskins

N.B. Only league appearances have gone towards the player of the month ratings and poll.

In alphabetical order...

Kaspars Gorkss

Average rating: 7.25 (4 games); MOTM polls: 3rd (Bolton H)

A man revived, Gorkss was nowhere near any Royals fan's best team a month ago, yet he's shown experience can make up for a lack of pace with some solid performances which have seen us look far more assured at centre-back. The return of Sean Morrison, and the emergence of Michael Hector, will hopefully motivate Gorkss to keep performing.

Adam Le Fondre

Average rating: 6.8 (5 games); MOTM polls: 2nd (Blackpool H), 2nd (Bolton H)

Alfie actually didn't get a MOTM win throughout January, despite scoring consecutive home hat-tricks, but he's shown the sort of form that is needed to guide us towards the playoffs and beyond. As long as he keeps scoring, nobody will complain. And doesn't Alfie just love January?

Jobi McAnuff

Average rating: 7.75 (4 games); MOTM polls: 1st (Watford A), 1st (Ipswich A)

McAnuff saved two MOTM performances for the two games away from the Mad Stad, but he's looked another man with a new lease of life in the last couple of weeks. Even whilst protecting Obita, he's had opportunity to get forward and show his skill on the ball.

Garath McCleary

Average rating: 6.4 (5 games); MOTM polls: 1st (Blackpool H)

Without an anonymous 3-rated performance against his former side Forest, McCleary's rating would have been 7.25. Still, he actually took the MOTM gong from Alfie against Blackpool, despite the striker scoring a hat-trick. Like most wingers he has a tendency to drift in and out of games, but this has been his most solid month yet.

Jordan Obita

Average rating: 7.25 (4 games); MOTM polls: 2nd (Watford A), 3rd (Ipswich A)

He may have been thrust into the left-back position after various injuries and lacklustre performances from other players, but he hasn't looked at all out of place, making the spot his own despite being directly challenged by a couple of teams including Blackpool. Not a long-term solution, though - probably...

Danny Williams

Average rating: 6.4 (5 games); MOTM polls: 1st (Bolton H), 2nd (Ipswich A)

Williams has looked energetic and lively in every game so far, and was another man to beat Le Fondre to the MOTM gong despite Alfie's hat-trick heroics. He's really blossomed since partnering Hope Akpan in the middle of the park, and previous winner Danny Guthrie might struggle to dislodge those two on returning from injury.
