Reading 0-2 Sheffield Wednesday: Instant Reaction

Reading's recent revival hit the skids after an early Alex Pearce red card severely limited any hopes of a Reading win on a miserable day for Royals fans in and around the Madejski Stadium. Here's our initial reaction to today's defeat.

Mark Thompson

Tommy will be along with a full match report & player ratings later on but the key event of the day happened just eight minutes in when Alex Pearce was shown a straight red card for bringing down former Royal Benik Afobe in the box. Sitting in Y25, I couldn't have been further from the incident so can't make any judgement on the decision but for my two pennies worth it seemed fair and even at that early stage it wasn't the first time Pearce had struggled inside a windy Madejski.

Chris Maguire stepped up and scored the penalty but credit to Reading who kept going and had 57% of the possession throughout the first half.

Sadly Nigel Adkins side just totally ran out of steam in the second period despite making all three subs and Afobe's strike just before the hour gave Wednesday a deserved three points.

Adam Le Fondre might look back on a chance inside the first two minutes and wonder what-if, while Pog also had a chance in those opening minutes that could have put a different complexion on the game.

There's nothing to really take away from this game, other than frustration that a moment of madness sunk our chances. Had Reading kept 11 men on the pitch there was no reason they shouldn't have taken three points but these things happen and all we can do is move on to QPR next week and try and put things right.

Stay tuned for Tommy's report over the weekend but meanwhile try and enjoy your Saturday night!
