Adkins told Charles Watts....
"Royston will be staying with the U21s group for the foreseeable future," said Adkins.
"I'm moulding a group of players who are young, hungry, ambitious and have great attitudes together.
"So it's fair to say that Royston is looking for pastures new and we'll just see how that progresses.
You can read full quotes and more reaction from Adkins here.
This confirms what the midfielder had been claiming on his Instagram account that he was being forced out by the club, with Adkins not taking him on his pre-season tour and something about four players.
What's the 4 new players bit? Anyway, he's off #readingfc pic.twitter.com/PMKnMiSfsR

Royston Drenthe signed for Reading on a free transfer last summer, having spent the previous six months in the Russian league with Alania.
He went on to make 23 appearances for the Royals last season, scoring two goals, but largely failed to convince and fell out of the first team picture towards the end of the season.
This isn't the first time Drenthe has used Instagram to let the fans know his side of the story, and this latest twist confirms what we all thought since the end of the season: he's likely to be off.
Of course, Royston still has his friends, as this tweet shows you:
