Reading FC Transfer Rumour Round Up - July 30

We round up who's rumoured to be arriving and leaving the Madejski Stadium during this transfer window.

Michael Steele

As Leonardo Ulloa headed Brighton into the Play Offs, premature jubilation at the Madejski soon turned to despair as results filtered through.

My first thoughts, along with quite a few Reading fans, was whether we would see some of our most important players play for Reading again.

Here we'll look at  the possible arrivals and departures that could occur during the summer transfer window at the club.

Possible Departures

Alex McCarthy

Has seen previous rumoured interest from Swansea and Arsenal and I would still expect to see either him or Adam Federici to leave the club before the end of the transfer window. McCarthy especially might be looking for a move to a Premier League club if he wants to make it into future England squads.

Royston Drenthe

Has been well reported that the former Real Madrid man has no future at the club. Rumours were circulating around Twitter that Dutch club Feyenoord were looking at him. This could suit Royston as he is originally from the Netherlands.

Jordan Obita

Earlier on in the transfer window, there were a few rumours hinting that Obita would be joining up with former Reading manager Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool but there hasn't been anything more reported on this story nowadays. With Obita playing for England Under 20s at the Toulon tournament and receiving call ups to the England Under 21s side, although he didn't feature for Gareth Southgate's side, I think there will be a few inquiries as the transfer window gets closer to the end but this one probably relies on the proposed takeover of Samrit Bunditkitsada being completed before the transfer window finishes. The club will be desperate to hold on to him as his rapid rise through the team continues.

Garath McCleary

Rumours in local newspapers said that West Brom were interested in him during the previous transfer window and could renew their interest after some impressive performances during last year's run-in. However, one of the stumbling blocks with any transfer for this player would be him actually passing a medical at any club. McCleary recently had back surgery to fix a problem that some people thought was his hamstring towards the end of last season. It has been reported that he won't be able to start the season so we will have to wait nervously to see if any bids are made for the Jamaican winger.

Possible Arrivals

In terms of potential arrivals at the club, these are just a few who have been rumoured and will obviously be dependent on whether the takeover of the club actually happens before the transfer window shuts. Some of these players will just be players that I feel would be ideal for the club to sign as we haven't been linked to many players so far!

Anton Ferdinand

After much speculation, it was confirmed that our owner in waiting Samrit Bunditkitsada was actually on Facebook and he was interacting with fans of the club and he told me that he would like to sign the former QPR defender for the club. He is currently at Police United FC which is a club in Thailand owned by Bunditkitsada, so this deal could be quite possible. Although he may not be the ideal signing for many fans, I feel he would be good backup to Morrison and Pearce, especially with Michael Hector being played in a centre midfield role during pre-season.

Joe Mason

He is currently with Cardiff and has fallen down the pecking order at the club with new strikers coming in such as Kenwyne Jones in the January transfer window and former Reading man Adam Le Fondre joining the club.  A local Cardiff newspaper reported that both Bolton and Reading were interested in the striker with Reading leading the race for his signature. This speculation has recently cooled a bit, especially with the delay to our takeover.

Hopefully we'll have a fair few more rumours on the in front once the takeover is completed. For more on that you can keep an eye on our update hub but stay tuned for more transfer rumours throughout the window here on The Tilehurst End.
