REPORT: Brian McDermott expected to be confirmed Reading FC manager

The bookies have had him as favourite since the weekend now it seems the club could confirm Brian McDermott as Steve Clarke's successor later today.

The latest indicator comes from Get Reading & Tilehurst End Podcast Extra Co-Host Charles Watts.

Sky Sports News HQ is now also confirming that talks are ongoing but that no deal has been signed.

McDermott was one of the initial favourites with the bookmakers after Clarke was sacked on Friday morning and his odds were slashed over the weekend when Sky reported talks with Nigel Pearson broke down over money.  At the time of writing he's now 1/6 with the bookies to take the job with nobody else but Pearson anywhere close.

If confirmed it would mark a surprise return for a man who was sacked two and a half years ago with the club facing relegation from the Premier League. Before that, the former Reading chief scout had taken the club to a play-off final, two FA Cup quarter-finals and of course promotion to the Premier League as Champions in 2011/12.

After leaving Reading, McDermott went on to be one of 7,215 managers under Massimo Cellino at Leeds before getting the sack and taking a scouting role at former club Arsenal.

Initial fan reaction has been mixed and while he won't be universally popular, you'd like to think he'd be able to hit the ground running given his knowledge of the club and many of the players still there.

We'll bring you more as we have it and in the meantime you can listen to the thoughts of our Tilehurst End Podcast team on the potential appointment.
