Reading FC Transfer Deadline Day Preview

Reading have often promised much but delivered little in transfer deadline days past, so what will February 2nd 2015 be like for Royals fans?

Let's begin with a recap. September 2014 saw that particular transfer window end with a flurry of activity to keep the Berkshire faithful interested until the late hours of the night. Royston Drenthe left (temporarily), Glenn Murray made one of the latest moves in the club's history, and there was plenty of speculation to boot.

Contrast that with the two before that, where deals were not only absent from the deadlines of September '13 and January '14, but were so far away from happening we may as well have been waiting for confirmation of life on Mars. Let's hope tomorrow is a bit more interesting.

The Story So Far

It's been a decent transfer window for Steve Clarke's men, the recently-installed boss has bought in Nathaniel Chalobah on-loan and completed the signing of full-back Jure Travner. That's added a bit of quality into the midfield as well as a natural left-back to cover for Jordan Obita- a position that's been dying to be filled for some time now. However, Glenn Murray's spell in Berkshire came to an end.

Looking outwards, and the positives grow further. Royston Drenthe's permanent departure from the club was somewhat protracted, but was completed midway through the window. Shaun Cummings also left for Millwall, with Reading ensuring a fee for a player who was ultimately third-choice and almost out-of-contract- these departures arguably opening the door for the aforementioned signings.

Finally, Craig Tanner, Aaron Tshibola, and Dominic Samuel have all dropped down the leagues to gain experience on-loan.

What Do We Need?

The big sore thumb of the window is a lack of replacement for striker Glenn Murray. Far from a world-class striker, the Palace loanee did notch the goals, and dropping points to the likes of Fulham showed the lack of finishing talent at the club. Neverthless, Pavel Pogrebnyak's return to fitness has seen the big Russian score two in three games, so is that hole quite as big as feared?

In defence, Anton Ferdinand's lack of playing time may tempt Hammond & co. into loaning in a centre-back- and Chris Gunter's sudden lay-off may mean right-back reinforcements are shipped in.

Otherwise, any other positions would be a bit of a surprise. Chalobah has ensured the midfield is well-stocked, and Garath McCleary's return to form and fitness should ease any lingering doubts over our quality on the flanks. Still, anything can happen.

In terms of outgoings, don't be surprised if more youngsters head out on loan. Clarke has actively discussed this, and the likes of Aaron Kuhl and Jack Stacey could be selected for an experience trip down to League One or Two. Furthermore, any permanent departures seem unlikely, but players such as Danny Guthrie appear to have their attention focussed on leaving the Madejski. Watch that space.

The Rumours

There have been a few floating ideas punted about social media, but the Danish striker Lasse Vibe has dominated the chat of Madejski Stadium bush-lingerers and casual Sky Sports News watchers, alike. It seems that this move is in doubt over the demanded transfer fee, but with the striker apparently keen this is still one to watch.
