Yesterday Steve Clarke all but confirmed that Danny Guthrie's contract will not be renewed this summer. Today the club revealed that they have extended Chris Gunter's contract until summer 2016.
The right back's contract was coming to an end this summer but it was known that the club always had the option to extend it for another year.
Despite one of Steve Clarke's first moves as Reading manager being to take away the vice-captaincy from him, Gunter has been one of the Royals' best performers under Clarke. His new manager clearly rates him, shown by the quote below:
Chris is an important member of the first team squad and, once I knew there was an option to extend Chris’ contract, I asked the club to take it up immediately.
Consistency of performance is what every manager wants from his players and Chris delivers consistently good performances.
The news that Reading have renewed Gunter's contract may not be good news for his right back rival Stephen Kelly whose own contract ends at the end of this June.
Keep an eye next week for our article discussing contract renewals which will include the chance for you to give your verdict on each player.
