Ryan Edwards Leaving Reading This Summer

The young Australian international midfielder has been told his contract will not be renewed.

Edwards made four Championship appearances for Reading this season after joining the club in 2011. He spent the 2013-2014 season on loan at Perth Glory where he made fifteen appearances.

He's also been a big part of the Australia youth setup, helping the U23 side to qualify for the U23 AFC Championship in Qatar in January 2016, which in turn acts as qualification for the Olympic tournament in Rio De Janeiro next year.

Australian website The Roar has a fantastic in depth interview with him, where he speaks openly about his time at Reading and Perth Glory (playing for his father Alistair, coach at the time), his international experience with the Socceroos, and a moving story about a former teammate who lost his battle with cancer a year ago.

Whilst Edwards did get game time towards the start of this season, he admits that it was down to the injury crisis at the club and since then opportunities have been hard to come by. He performed well for the Royals without ever really shining, and with a bloated squad in his position, it's probably best for all concerned that Edwards establishes himself elsewhere and helps the Australian youth squad to glory next year. We all wish Ryan the best of luck in the future.

So that's the first expiring contract sorted - you can expect the rest of the renewal puzzle to slowly take shape over the coming weeks and months. We'll keep you updated as and when they happen.
