Steve Clarke's side were among the seeded teams in the draw, alongside the likes of Queens Park Rangers and Nigel Adkins' Sheffield United. The match will be played at the Colchester Community Stadium in Essex on the week commencing August 10.
Tony Humes men finished 19th in last season's League One and it will be the first meeting between the two blue-and-white sides since a 3-0 win for Reading in January 2002, in the old Division Two. The Royals last won away to the U's in 1981.
The Royals' relationship with the League Cup has not been as successful at its' domestic cup counterpart in recent memory, with defeats to Derby County and Charlton Atheltic book-ending distressing losses to Arsenal and Peterborough United in recent years.
