Ten years after the Irish duo signed for Steve Coppell's infamous 2005/06 team The Tilehurst End decided to settle once and for all who was the best signing out of the two Cork City old boys. To do so, regular contributor Sophie took to the Long corner and assistant editor Marc defended Doyler. Here's what they had to say:
Sophie:
He's proved himself at international, Premier League and Championship levels, yes so did Doyle, but Long has been able to maintain his form in all competitions and not slip away.
Marc:
Admittedly both have the air of likeability, consistency, and graft, but as Reading's best striker for three of the four seasons he was in Berkshire, it is Doyle for me.
We then put it to you, and as the voting closed on Sunday morning at 7am the results were in and it was the older of the two attackers that edged ahead by just seven of the 247 votes submitted. It also came as a sort of surprise, with Long holding the advantage for much of the voting period and the tally being exactly 50/50 just 12 hours before voting ended.
Congratulations, Kevin!
Now we've settled this debate, who else would you like to see go head-to-head as the better Reading signing of past and present? Comment below.
