Predicting Reading FC's Run-In

13 games to go and while our automatic promotion hopes may be hanging by a thread (50/1 with Bet365 if you do fancy it...) the play-offs remain very much in sight. So will we get ourselves over the line and into that promotion lottery or maybe even have a remarkable run into the top two? Here's what our editorial team have to say.

Will we reach the playoffs? Just about. 73 is the average number of points teams have needed to reach the play-offs in the last 10 Championship seasons. We should get that.

19 points out of those games will have us on 79 which should see us into the top six, probably as 4th or 5th. Although we'll slip up to sides around us away from home, there will be plenty of good home games to see us through. A couple of banana skin results against a Forest or a Blackburn will be cancelled out by solid draws and wins against Leeds, Newcastle, and Brighton.

There's a very real possibility that we could win just two of our next six games, so it's important not to get disheartened. There's also a very real possibility that we could win all of our last five games. That final run in has been pretty kind to us, and should help us make the top six. We'll be nowhere near the top two, but we'll definitely make the play-offs.

23 points would leave us on 83, which has been more than enough for the playoffs in each of the last 15 seasons (and would have seen us win the league in 2007/08!).

I believe this Reading side has shown it has more than enough to beat inferior teams, and the last four games give us a real opportunity to head into the playoffs with momentum behind us. When it gets to that stage it'll be a lot tougher, as we've tended to struggle against the bigger sides in the division - especially away from home. But I think we have done enough already to at least ensure we will be in "the lottery" come May.

You'd hope we'd make it. With my predicted 25 points and a grand total of 85 points, we'd be nearer the title than falling out of the play-off places. I don't think any of my predictions are all that controversial, and unless there's a major shock to the system somewhere along the way and Stam's men go into freefall, you'd have to think a play-off place is as guaranteed as Stam's head being bald by the time May comes around.

Bucks Royal

Our form will be shaky over the next few weeks whilst we play some of the best sides in the division. However, a relatively straightforward run-in at the end of the season should push us over the line to ensure a spot in the Playoffs.
