It's the January transfer window and Chris Gunter has less than six months of his contract left at the Madejski Stadium. So, of course, the 26 year old is giving interviews and finding his name in the transfer rumours section in the press.
MetroSport have today "exclusively" revealed that Premier League trio Norwich City, Newcastle United and West Brom have all been monitoring his current situation as have Championship clubs QPR and Middlesbrough.
The MetroSport wonder given "his contract situation", whether Reading "could be willing to cash in on Gunter during the January transfer window and could be available for the modest fee of just £500,000."
Now this is a perfectly believable transfer rumour, though, selling him this month would not make sense for the Royals. Lose Gunter and we are left with Michael Hector and Niall Keown as the only players in the senior squad to have played right back in their careers, and they are both centre backs.
The next six months are the biggest of Gunter's career which has reached a cross roads. He can no longer be regarded as a player of potential but in Euro 2016 he has the perfect opportunity to impress would be suitors.
Gunter's agent will be in overdrive until his future is sorted out so Reading fans should get used to these sort of rumours appearing. Gunter may not have fulfilled his early potential but he is still one of the Championship's most reliable right backs so it is only natural that he will interest other clubs. Reading would do well to keep hold of him.
