Reading FC Pre-Madejski Stadium Home Kits World Cup 1965-69 v 1994-96

It's our final First Round tie and the pundits are predicting a landslide: a Pelada classic versus a kit inspired by Coventry City.

1965-1969

As any of you who have read previous ties in this series will know, Reading's home kit has often changed at seemingly random times to completely new designs. 1965 was another such occasion, when we moved from blue and white hoops to an all sky-blue kit.

This pre-season photo shows some of the players wearing a new crest shown below, but it is unclear if this was worn during the season. It seems as though the move to sky-blue was done to imitate Coventry City, something which will sound rather bizarre to the younger fan. Thankfully in 1969 manager Jack Mansell ordered a return to our traditional blue and white hoops.

This was the first Reading kit I ever owed and if it wasn't so small I'd probably still be wearing it. It was our second and final kit made by Pelada.

I think it's the only Reading kit I've seen where I notice and like the shorts and socks. They complement the shirt in a simple but smart design. I'd expect this kit to be very popular.
