In shock news emerging this evening, Reading are set to seal the signing of a player who isn't Dutch. Following on from reports a few days ago that John Swift was being linked with a move to the Royals, an update tonight suggest that the Englishman's signature is imminent.
Swift had been at Chelsea, having graduated from the Blues' academy, but his contract has now expired. He also has very recent Championship experience, playing for Brentford on loan last season. Earlier in his career, he spent time on loan at Rotherham United and Swindon Town.
Reading have been busy bees recently
So far, four arrivals have been confirmed: Danzell Gravenberch, Joey Van den Berg, Joseph Mendes and Anssi Jaakkola. Plus, according to recent reports, we'll soon add both John Swift and Roy Beerens, with Gaston Campi currently on trial.
That makes a whopping seven actual or potential transfers by mid-July, showing how ridiculously quickly Reading have come out of the starting blocks. With only one of those seven having experience of English football, you'd imagine that most would need some time to bed into the squad. So, signing them early makes a lot of sense.
