Unlike in the summer, Reading fans do have something to get excited about this deadline day as the club have confirmed the loan signing of midfielder Jordon Mutch from Crystal Palace until the end of the season.
The 25 year old was originally rumoured to be on Jaap Stam's shortlist in December, but the link seemed to go cold in the lead-up to, and throughout, the transfer window until a couple of national journalists last night confirmed that the deal was very mu[t]ch on.
Mutch, who has been capped once by the England Under-21s, began his career at Birmingham City, before moving to Cardiff City where he won promotion to the Premier League. Two years later he made the switch to QPR, but spent just half a season at Loftus Road before joining Crystal Palace. However he has found first team opportunities with the Eagles hard to come by this season, making just four substitute appearances in the Premier League.
Speaking on the loan signing, Jaap Stam told the club's website:
“Jordon is a good technical player, he is quick and he has good stamina as a runner in midfield. He has a lot of experience of both Championship and Premier League football and it is good to bring a player with his quality into the squad – he will give us more choices against different opponents and different styles of play going forward.”
Mutch arrives too late to be involved against Birmingham City tonight, but could make his debut at Ipswich Town at the weekend. He follows Tiago Ilori and Adrian Popa through the door in Berkshire this month, and adds to an already stacked midfield department.
