The Tilehurst End Advent Calendar: December 3

Time to find out who's no. 3...

Every day this month we’re fondly remembering Reading players who have donned the shirt number of that particularly day, discussing what they mean to the club. Today, it’s Chris Armstrong (because Shorey would have been too easy).

Chris Armstrong

  • Position: Left-back
  • Nationality: Geordie
  • Total Reading FC appearances: 48
  • Total Reading FC goals: 1

Memorable Moment

It’s hard to pick out one moment for a player who essentially only appeared in one season for the Royals, giving a consistent stream of 7/10 performances and earning the fans’ recognition as the 2008/09 Player of the Season.

However Armstrong, now 35, had his career cut short due to an MS diagnosis with the Madejski Stadium rising to its feet in the third minute of a game between his two former clubs, Reading and Sheffield United, in January 2013. Some finger the Royals as being just-another-club in a flatpack stadium with quiet fans but it was a moment that expressed how dearly we hold those who played with heart and soul. Not everything has to have a medal wrapped around its neck to give it meaning.
