Championship Promotion Watch: Feb 27-March 5

Does play-off glory await Reading? We take a look at our current cushion and how it might change.

(1) Brighton - 11 Points Ahead - 13 Games Left

Results last week: Brighton 3-0 Reading

Promotion Odds: This Week: 1/9 - Last Week: 2/13

We all saw what Brighton are capable of this weekend as they dispatched Reading in straight forward style at the Amex. 71 points after 33 games puts them on pace for 99 points and baring a ridiculous collapse, they'll be in the Premier League next season.

Games This Week: TUES: Newcastle (2nd) (H) - SAT: Nottingham Forest (18th) (A)

They may be all but promoted but Brighton have a big fight on their hands for the title. Tomorrow night it's first versus second as Newcastle go to the Amex live on the telebox, before Brighton head up to face an inconsistent Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

(2) Newcastle - 10 Points Ahead - 13 Games Left

Results last week: Newcastle 2-0 Aston Villa, Newcastle 2-2 Bristol City

Promotion Odds: This Week: 1/16 - Last Week: 1/12

Newcastle conceded top spot by drawing at home to Bristol City on Saturday. Still, the way they fought back from 2-0 down shows that this side has the guts to slog it out till the end.

Games This Week: TUES: Brighton (1st) (A) - SAT: Huddersfield (3rd) (A)

Newcastle get a taste of what Reading have just been through, as they visit Brighton and Huddersfield in the space of five days. If there is to be a late wobble from Rafa Benitez's side, this looks like the week it'll happen. If they do beat Huddersfield than it would almost certainly wrap up any lingering questions of whether the top two can be caught. Lose two in a week though, and who knows what David Wagner's side might come up with......

(3) Huddersfield - 5 Points Ahead - 13 Games Left

Result last week: Huddersfield 1-0 Reading, Barnsley 1-1Huddersfield

Current Promotion Odds: This Week 3/2 - Last Week: 2/1

Huddersfield ground their way past Reading on Tuesday night before pulling out a 1-1 draw in a tricky Yorkshire derby at Barnsley. It's nine games unbeaten in all competitions for Wagner's team and they're the only team left that might upset the top two.

Game This Week: SAT: Newcastle (2nd) (H)

Huddersfield take on Manchester City in an FA Cup replay on Wednesday night before heading back home to take on second place Newcastle at the weekend. As mentioned earlier, you get the feeling this is do or die for their top two ambitions and even a draw might just leave them too much to do.

(4) Leeds - 1 Points Ahead - 12 Games Left

Result Last Week: Leeds 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday

Current Promotion Odds: This Week: 4/1 - Last Week: 9/2

Like Reading, Leeds seem to know how to grind out results at home, as they once again took three points from a game they were second best in against Sheffield Wednesday. Garry Monk's side may be inconsistent away from Elland Road but at home they've won eight of the last nine.

Games This Week: FRI: Birmingham (14th) (A)

Gianfranco Zola got a much needed win at Wolves last week to keep the vultures away for the time being. Birmingham are far from a bad side and Leeds haven't been inspirational on the road so there's a decent chance Reading could have the chance to go back up to fourth win a win on Saturday.

(5) Reading - 60 Points - 12 Games Left

Result Last Week: Huddersfield 1-0 Reading, Brighton 3-0 Reading

Current Promotion Odds: This Week: 8/1 - Last Week: 5/1

A miserable week has seen our promotion odds drift significantly to 8/1. If you're still tempted to put money on us to go up, now is the time. A week when you lose twice, concede four and don't score is never good but the fact they came against a rampant Huddersfield and Prem bound Brighton should dampen disappointment somewhat.

Game This Week: Sat: Wolves (20th) (H)

All of a sudden Wolves find themselves in the thick of a relegation battle and with just four points separating Paul Lambert's side from the bottom three, every game becomes that bit more important. Wolves beat us 2-0 earlier in the season, so they've clearly got talent but I'm hopeful we'll get a stubborn fight back from Stam and the team, to take three points.

(6) Sheffield Wednesday - 2 Points Behind - 12 Games Left

Result Last Week: Sheffield Wednesday 1-2 Brentford, Leeds 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday

Current Promotion Odds: This Week: 4/1 - Last Week: 4/1

Wednesday had just as bad, if not a worse week than Reading did. A home defeat against Brentford was followed up by a disappointing loss at Leeds to leave the Owls just five points clear of seventh placed Fulham, who also have a game in hand.

Games This Week: SAT: Norwich (8th) (H)

This is another good fixture for Reading who'll see a play-off rival drop points whatever the result. A draw would be lovely but a Sheffield Wednesday win would leave Norwich at least 10 points behind us with 11 games left, a gap you'd suggest would be too much for Alex Neil's team.
