Key Battles: Burton Albion v Reading FC

Here are the match-ups that could decide Reading's final league game of the season at Burton.

With Burton securing Championship survival last week in their 1-1 draw at Barnsley last week, manager Nigel Clough has promised changes to his starting line-up with Stephen Bywater and Will Miller the only guaranteed starters. Therefore, it is hard to predict what sort of Brewers line-up we will see today, or what sort of Reading line-up we'll see for that matter, with Jaap Stam potentially resting some players ahead of the play-offs.

Cauley Woodrow vs Tiago Ilori

22-year-old Cauley Woodrow is currently on loan at Burton, having arrived at the club from Fulham in the January transfer window.

In the 18 games that Woodrow has played in, the striker has scored four goals and has two assists to his name.

For Reading, Tiago Ilori could get his first start since his return from injury in place of Liam Moore, with the Portuguese centre-back looking to take his chance and impress his manager.

Ilori could be a big player next season regardless of what division Reading are in next season. If the former Liverpool defender can put in an impressive performance, it could give Stam something to think about in the summer.

Jackson Irvine vs George Evans

Playing in the middle of the park, Jackson Irvine is one of Burton Albion's best players. The 23-year-old has had a wonderful season for Burton with 10 goals in 41 league games.

Irvine's goals have played a huge part in Burton securing survival in the Championship, the 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday during March and the 1-0 win over Huddersfield at the start of April being the most notable.

Meanwhile, George Evans will be looking to cement his place in the starting line-up with another good performance. The 22-year-old has had a solid season having made 33 appearances and scoring two goals.

When he has played, Evans has been the unsung hero in midfield with his tackling and his defensive work - things that have improved massively since Jaap Stam took over as manager.

Ben Turner vs Joseph Mendes

Ben Turner completed a free transfer from Cardiff last summer and has been a key man in the Brewers’ defence.

Playing at centre-back, Turner's performances have played a massive part in Burton avoiding relegation. However, Turner has been part of back four that has conceded 59 goals, which interestingly is three goals less than Reading.

Joseph Mendes may well be another player that could start as Stam may look to rotate his squad.

The Frenchman has had an injury hit season, which has restricted his game time. But the forward has demonstrated what he is capable of, with the game against Villa being a prime example of this.

The striker’s pace and strength proved to be a real handful for Villa’s defenders who couldn’t handle him at times and his two goals were nothing short of quality.

If Mendes can replicate that performance, then it should be give Reading the all important momentum going into the play-offs.
