Following today's Carabao Cup draw, Reading will face Gillingham at home in the first round of this season's competition.

The Royals have not got past round four of the competition since 1997-98 - 20 years this coming season. Last year they were beaten by Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium after beating Plymouth, MK Dons and Brighton in the previous round.

As for their record against Gillingham, Reading have won 42, lost 38 and drawn 21. The most recent meeting between the two sides came over 10 years ago though, as a 0-0 draw was played out in the Championship on New Years' Day 2005. The Gills were relegated from the second tier that season and have not returned since. In 2016-17 they finished 20th in League One - one point and one place above the drop zone.

Who knows, with the competition being sponsored by Reading's principal shirt sponsor Carabao this season, maybe glory awaits...

The tie will be played on either Tuesday 8th or Wednesday 9th of August 2017.
