Reading FC are through to the next round of the Carabao Cup after beating Gillingham 2-0 at the Madejski Stadium.

Jaap Stam picked a very young side, with his senior squad struggling for injuries. It featured a number of academy graduates, including Richards, Rinomhota, Barrett and Smith from the start.

It took a while for The Royals to get going, with not much action to speak about in the first half for either side, though Jaakkola did have to make a couple of good stops to preserve his clean sheet.

Last season’s breakthrough star, Liam Kelly, was the man of the evening as he scored the first with a fabulous strike after the ball was worked to him on the edge of the box.

From that point, Reading pushed harder for a second to seal progress into the next round, and the second goal came courtesy of good work from new signing Mo Barrow feeding the ball to Kelly from the right, with the young Irishman smashing the ball off the post for a comfortable 2-0 victory in the end.
