We’ve had another month of Championship football, and things are looking a little brighter for the Royals. After the dire start to the season, Reading have gone on a run of two wins and one draw in their last five matches, leaving us all a lot more optimistic than we had been before the international break.
Key to that improvement has been a general upturn in individual performances across the board, meaning we’ve got some good candidates for August’s player of the month award. Last time out the honour went to Andy Yiadom who romped to victory with 59% of the vote.
So who do you think should take the award for September? We’ve shortlisted the five best candidates according to how well they’ve played, their average marks in our player ratings, and of course the goals they’ve scored. For clarity’s sake, the games we’re looking back on are Sheffield Wednesday (home), Preston North End (away), Norwich City (home), Hull City (home) and Brentford (away).
Without further ado, and in no particular order...
Average rating: 6.2 (5 appearances); Man of the Match awards: Sheffield Wednesday (1st), Hull City (2nd)
Last month’s winner has had an equally impressive September, despite being confined to the left side of the defence rather than his preferred right. He even managed a goal and an assist in the 3-0 win over Hull City in a typically all-action performance.
Average rating: 6.25 (4 appearances); Man of the Match awards: Preston North End (3rd), Norwich City (3rd)
A steady month as summer signing Walker established himself as Reading’s number one in the continued absence of Vito Mannone. The Royals have only earned two clean sheets this season (one August, one September), and Walker has been in goal both times.
Average rating: 6.2 (5 appearances); Man of the Match awards: Preston North End (2nd), Hull City (1st)
Another good month from Ilori who’s shown a big improvement on last season. He’s been tidy at the back, scored a crucial goal at Preston, and even put in a top display against Hull at right-back.
Average rating: 6.5 (4 appearances); Man of the Match awards: Preston North End (1st), Norwich City (1st), Brentford (2nd)
The only player to win two man of the match awards, Swift was the joint highest-rated man in Reading’s squad with 6.5/10 (alongside Bodvarsson). His creativity proved crucial at Preston and Brentford, playing a decisive part in four of the five goals across those two games.
Jon Dadi Bodvarsson
Average rating: 6.5 (4 appearances); Man of the Match awards: Norwich City (2nd), Hull City (3rd), Brentford (3rd)
Reading’s top-scorer found the net three times in September, having registered the same amount in August. However, this was the month he seemed to properly cement his place as the team’s main striker, starting up top over Sam Baldock and Marc McNulty against Hull City and Brentford, scoring both times, having netted against Norwich City from the bench.
His Championship record now stands at an impressive 95 minutes per goal, behind only Neal Maupay of Brentford (74 mpg).
