Burton Albion 1-3 Reading FC: Player Ratings

Varied ratings following a crucial away victory at the Pirelli Stadium.

Vito Mannone: 5

Competent in his work, although very little to do other than pick the ball out of the net from the penalty.

Chris Gunter: 7

Very comfortable on the left side if the back three, left the physical battles to Moore and Ilori and used his extra pace to good covering effect. Extra mark for his key contribution - the lovely curling effort with his weaker foot.

Liam Moore: 6

Assured performance despite an early booking. Let nothing get past him.

Tiago Ilori: 6

As Liam Moore, very assured and calm and allowed no time or space for Bent and Akins to exploit.

Leandro Bacuna: 7

Very good shift up and down the flank, defensively sound but two assists bumps him up a mark.

Mo Barrow: 6

Didn’t seem entirely comfortable on the right but defensively let very little go. Provided the assist for the game-clinching third which increases the mark a notch.

Dave Edwards: 4

Standard Edwards display, all heart and determination with tidy quality on the ball. Downgraded for conceding what appeared to be a needless penalty.

Joey van den Berg: 5

Standard Joey performance, kept his head mopping up second balls which he does extremely well, and seemed to enjoy a bit of banter with the Burton fans down the touchline when taking throw-ins.

Sone Aluko: 4

Toiled and saw plenty of the ball but struggled to really impose himself on the game in an attacking sense.

Yann Kermorgant: 4

Took the physical battle to the Burton defence but sadly somewhat anonymous despite his efforts. Failed to really link up with either the midfield or Bodvarsson.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson: 8

Toiled hard, ran the channels really well and twice got his reward for being in the right place at the right time. For those of you who are Championship Manager fans, we need to consider changing his category from “this player will be used in a squad rotation system” to that of “key player”.

Tommy Elphick: 6

A tidy debut, very neat in defensive positions with the ball at feet, physical enough to withstand the Burton attack and was a real threat at set pieces.

George Evans: 5

Fewer than 10 minutes for Evans, seamless transition however between him and Joey.
