In least surprising news of the campaign, none of the Reading men’s team were included in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, meaning for the second year in a row it was down to Reading Women to provide the sole representative in the annual end of season XI. After Mary Earps’ inclusion in the WSL 1 Team of the Year in 2016/17, Fara Williams has made it in this time around after an excellent debut season in the blue and white hoops.
England’s most capped player of all-time, Williams was considered a hugely impressive signing for the Royals after joining from Arsenal last summer, and she has not disappointed. With six goals and five assists in 14 league games, the 34-year-old midfielder has played a key part in Kelly Chambers’ side rising to as high as third in the WSL 1 this season.
Last night’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal leaves Reading Women sixth in the table with four games to go, but still with every chance of re-entering that top three. Along with Remi Allen (eight goals, four assists) and Brooke Chaplen (five goals, one assist), Williams has helped lead the team to a point at league leaders Chelsea and a historic 2-0 win over second place Manchester City in recent weeks.
