There are some absolute scorchers in here.

2017/18 was a pretty awful season in plenty of ways for Reading, but we were still treated to some pretty amazing strikes. Whether it was hopeful whacks from distance, or more intricate team moves, we saw it all.

Now, as is obligatory for end-of-season content, we’ve collected some of the best Royals goals from the last nine months or so and embedded the relevant YouTube clips next to them, before inviting you to vote for your favourite.

You know the drill.

Leandro Bacuna vs Millwall

The long-range rocket

An absolute piledriver as Bacuna scored his first Reading goal. The former Aston Villa player picks the ball up deep in midfield, drives forward into the final third before unleashing a cannon-strike past Tom King in the Millwall goal.

Modou Barrow vs Leeds United

The sneaky pass round the back

More of a dark horse contender this one, but Joey van den Berg’s glorious assist for Barrow to find the winner against his former club deserves some love. Like Bacuna, van den Berg makes the goal with a surging run through the midfield, but this time puts the chance on a plate for Barrow, who obliges with a sharp finish.

John Swift vs Nottingham Forest (the second one)

The rapid counter-attack

Jaap Stam’s Reading wasn’t exactly known for its breakneck counters from one end of the pitch to t’other, but they did that twice on Halloween 2017. John Swift put both of them away, converting Bacuna’s cross in the first half before getting on the end of Barrow’s in the second. This strike, which doubled the Royals’ lead, gets the nod for the delicate, dainty flick that assists Swift.

Sone Aluko vs Derby County

Pass, move, shimmy, shoot

Sone Aluko had a stinker of a debut campaign in RG2, but he sure was capable of scoring a good goal or two (yes, the other one features lower down). Facing a high-flying Derby County who were expected to batter Reading on the day, Aluko extended the away side’s lead by putting the finishing touch on a pass-and-move routine with John Swift.

Liam Kelly vs Derby County

The pocket rocket

It would be more than three months before Reading scored another really good goal (according to this shortlist at least), but it was well worth the wait. Kelly absolutely leathers it into the top corner from far out - it’s better if you just watch it.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson vs Leeds United

The team goal

Rapid interplay gave the Royals a lead in Stam’s last home match in charge. Kelly seizes the ball to break up a Leeds attack, before then going quickly to Pelle Clement who plays in Aluko, the Nigerian feeding Bodvarsson with a quick through-ball.

Sone Aluko vs Queens Park Rangers

Wowzer

As promised, Aluko’s other super-strike from last season, a simply stunning goal as the former Fulham man receives the ball deep on the right, spins past his man, cuts inside and unleashes a piledriver. A goal worthy of giving Reading their first home win since November.
