All good things have to come to an end and the smallest ever nation’s run at the 2018 World Cup was finished on Tuesday night after a 2-1 defeat to Croatia.
Sadly for Reading fans, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson didn’t get on the pitch after failing to get a shot in versus Nigeria in the previous game, and Heimir Hallgrímsson opted to start with Alfred Finnbogason in Rostov-on-Don before substituting on striker Bjorn Sigurdarson as the game progressed.
However there was some good news from a Royals perspective as Gylfi Sigurdsson made amends for his penalty miss against the Super Eagles with a composed finish from the spot, making the attacking midfielder the first Reading academy graduate to ever score at a World Cup.
The question now is, who will be the next Royals player to appear at a World Cup, perhaps in four years’ time? Bodvarsson again? Adi Popa? Danny Loader? Only time will tell.
