Our Carabao Cup journey is over for another season after the Royals lost 2-0 to Premier League Watford at the Madejski Stadium. Isaac Success opened the scoring just before half time, with Domingos Quina scoring a stunning goal in the second half to progress them to the third round.

Paul Clement was disappointed in his teams performance and knew the Royals could do better, he told the Official Club website and GetReading: “The manner of the defeat is disappointing; I think we can do a lot better than that.”

Clement on the first goal

”The first goal was a disappointing one. We had the ball in a decent area; the ball turned over, and the next moment they’re tapping it in from three or four yards. That’s a disappointing goal to go against us.”

Clement on players making mistake

“There’s no doubt we made a lot of mistakes tonight. Too many. You could say that a team from the level above forces you into those mistakes, but I think it was more of our own doing.

”When four, five, six players are not having their A-game, it becomes a big test. So I’m disappointed that we didn’t do better, because I know the team are capable of giving more.”

Clement on Watford’s comfortable victory

”And in the end it was a comfortable victory for them. We pushed a bit at the end, but that’s normal – when you’re 2-0 down you throw a few men forward. We want to do well in every game we play, whoever the opponent, whatever the challenge, home or away.

”So I’m disappointed in the manner of the defeat, but at the same time it’s important that we recover quickly.”

Clement on progression

“The margin of our league defeats have been very, very tight, so we have to find a way of tipping the advantage in our favour. Hopefully we can put together some results where we are winning by a goal and the points add up and we are in a much more healthy position.

”We haven’t been battered by anybody - this was a performance [against Watford] where we suffered the most but we were up against a side from a higher division.

”In all the other games we could have won or drawn or lost. We are not damaged goods and I don’t think we are far away from getting some good results.”

Clement on Sheffield Wednesday Saturday

”It’s a quick turnaround and we have an important game here on Saturday against Sheffield Wednesday and we have to do everything we can to get the victory.”
