December was a difficult month for Reading (which month hasn’t been this season?!), as they failed to win any of their six games, picking up just three points and scoring just three goals to slip into the Championship relegation zone. Oh, and they had three different managers in charge as well.
As is customary though, a Player of the Month has to be chosen, and we’ve selected a shortlist of three candidates for you to vote for. In alphabetical order...
Anssi Jaakkola
Average rating: 6.00 (6 appearances); Man of the Match awards: Sheffield United (3rd), Stoke City (3rd), Rotherham (3rd)
The winner of our last two Player of the Month awards is nominated once again, after he became the first Reading goalkeeper this season to go through a whole month without being displaced. Jaakkola has proven himself to be a reliable shot stopper (he’s made the most saves per game in the Championship this season), and that’s probably what’s kept him in the team, but his distribution has come under criticism as Jose Gomes has introduced his style of play, which involves passing out from the back.
Andy Rinomhota
Average rating: 6.33 (6 appearances); Man of the Match awards: Stoke City (1st), Middlesbrough (1st), QPR (1st)
Having broken into the side at the start of November, Rinomhota has now established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet after impressing with his energy, drive and composure in the middle of the park. It helps that he’s an academy graduate as well, but the 21-year-old is hugely popular with fans, shown by his three Man of the Match awards in December and the fact that he was the player that the most supporters wanted to stay in our transfer window polls.
Andy Yiadom
Average rating: 5.67 (6 appearances); Man of the Match awards: Millwall (1st)
Looking for his second Player of the Month award of the campaign after picking up the accolade in August, Yiadom has continued his strong start to life at Reading by proving to be a good option both at the back and going forward on the right flank. He would likely have a few more assists this season if there was more threat in the middle, however he does have the occasional defensive relapse.
