Key Plays

8’ - [REA] Lovely ball from Adam to set Gunter sprinting down the right, fizzes the ball in and twice the keeper does well to stop a rocket from Ejaria and a follow up from Swift.

15’ - [REA] Gunter pushes forward (I know!?) and links up beautifully with Joao but predictably skies his shot over the bar.

24’ - [REA] Charlie Adam with an absolute ping over the top to Joao who feeds Swift down the right edge of the box, whips it in but keeper collects. Great move again.

{ROYALS SHOWING INTENT. NOISE FROM THE 1871}

33’ - [QPR] Blackett beaten down the left with a through ball, low cross driven in and a simple finish at the far post for Hugill, GOAL. OFFSIDE. Collective sigh of relief around the Madstad. Important Royals don’t let that scare kill the momentum of their good start.

HALF-TIME - Reading the better side, not enough composure in front of goal.

HT Threats [REA] - Adam (range of passing) | [QPR] - Osayi-Samuel (a menace down the right)

51’ - [REA] Corner comes in from Adam, headed away only as far as Swift from about 22 yards out, lets it bounce once then hits right through it. GOOOAAALL! WHAT. A. HIT! Swifty right in the top bins nobody’s saving that. 1-0 Royals.

60’ - [REA] Royals break away with Meite down the left, finds Gunter on the overlap who whips it in, Joao with the header just over. Great move *again*.

61’ - [QPR] Down the other end QPR break away, slide the ball down the right to Osayi-Samuel who drives it low into Eze, lovely turn on a pivot and slides it past the keeper but blocked off the line by Morrison! What a chance to square it up.

64’ - [REA] Game opening up with Gunter crossing in to Jaoo who deals with an awkward height to half volley at goal forcing a good save!

78’ - [QPR] Rather than take his time and slow the game down, Rafael blasts the ball out and QPR instantly hit back on the attack and rattle the crossbar, Gunter doesn’t deal with the rebound with Rafael parries away brilliantly.

Both Gunter and Rafael in a good old not-so-friendly fire tussle with each other following that chaos.

89’ - [QPR] Rafael makes an incredible stop from Hugill that he didn’t know much about, but may have just secured the three points here. QPR relentlessly peppering the ball into the box but eventually comes to nothing after a shot from distance.

FULL TIME. Phew.

Brian McDermott Appreciation Player of the Game

Charlie Adam’s wizardry in the middle of the park may have surprised a few at the Mad Stad, but the guy can flat out ping a football. Who knew he’d be the one unlocking opposition defence up with pinpoint accuracy and top tier crossfield range. Not to mention that’s four starts in a row too…And they said he couldn’t hack it. Pssh. Special mention to Swift too. What a strike.

Other Notes

Attendance: 12,495 (meh, not bad for Boxing Day).

Royals now up to 15th in the table… 10 points off sixth place with a game in hand…

On your marks…

A fast start from Reading today unlike the past month or so, instantly set QPR off on the back foot and got the midfield relaxed and playing confidently in the middle and going forward.

Joao with some nice hold up play today, as well as creating and getting on the end of a couple of good chances. Most of what would have been asked of him pregame he accomplished.

Threats

[QPR] - Osayi-Samuel was a menace down the right, tying Blackett up in knots at times as he was the primary chance creator throughout.

[REA] - Charlie Adam might not look the part, but I’m going to pay him the ultimate compliment today…he’s becoming very Gylfi-esque with his passing.

There, I said it. Chew on it.

Gunter and Rafael came to boiling point with each other twice this game, once is fine but twice suggests there’s something else going on here. All started from Rafael’s hesitancy in coming off his line. Which is frustrating in all honesty.

Just imagine what three points against either Barnsley or Stoke would have done NO! NO LOOKING IN THE PAST. (but still…) (imagine) .

Next up: Onto Preston.

Sunday 29th || Preston (6th) vs Reading (15th) || KO: 3PM

Chance to set the stage for a huge 2020…
