Jose Gomes arrived as Reading manager two months ago and has taken the club from 21st in the Championship to... 21st in the Championship.
The sacking of Paul Clement may have divided the fanbase to an extent but few were ever too emotionally attached the Gomes’ incumbent as to be furious at the new man’s arrival. Instead, the long-held general sense of apathy around the club prevailed in the early moments of his tenure.
Who is he? What’s he actually done? Where even is this “Portugal”? were the sort of questions asked of a relatively unheard of manager rocking up with a CV that boasted time in the Arab world, Hungary, and various backroom jobs around Europe.
On the pitch, Gomes has taken a modest 10 points from 11 games, ranked 18th in the Championship for this period. The club remain stubbornly attached to the relegation zone and have only enjoyed home wins over Nottingham Forest and Blackburn, throwing away a vital victory at Bolton in the dying seconds.
Off the pitch, many have enjoyed his efforts to push for a more harmonic tone of voice between the management and fans. It is a contrast to Jaap Stam’s more combative like-it-or-lump-it approach, but that is arguably where the contrasts end as Gomes has returned Reading to a possession-at-all-costs tactical approach.
But do fans feel he walks the walk like he talks the talk? Vote below.
