Vote For Your March Player Of The Month

Three wins and a draw from five games in March represented Reading’s best monthly return of the season.

March was a largely impressive month for Reading, with wins over Ipswich (2-1), Wigan (3-2) and Preston (2-1) lifting the Royals to 19th in the Championship table and four points clear of relegation danger. With a 0-0 draw at Stoke and 3-0 defeat to promotion chasing Leeds thrown in to the mix too, no club outside of the top six picked up more points than Jose Gomes’ men last month. We’ve picked out five of the star performers (in alphabetical order) for you to choose from as your Player of the Month...

Mo Barrow

Average rating: 5.80 (5 appearances); Man of the Match awards: Leeds (2nd), Preston (2nd)

Having scored just once all season before March, Barrow came into his own last month, netting three times - all at crucial moments. He first popped up with a 90th minute winner at Ipswich, before his excellent 25-yard strike drew Reading level late on against Wigan the following week. Barrow then ended the month with what proved to be the winning goal against Preston, having set up Yakou Meite to open the scoring earlier in the game.

Emiliano Martinez

Average rating: 6.60 (5 appearances); Man of the Match awards: Ipswich (1st), Wigan (1st), Leeds (3rd)

Last month’s winner has carried on his fantastic form on loan from Arsenal and proven to be key to Reading’s revival. You can pick out a crucial save he has made in every game last month, and his ability to command his area, particularly when dealing with crosses, spreads confidence. Martinez’s performance against Ipswich was arguably one of the best by any goalkeeper in the Championship this season.

Yakou Meite

Average rating: 5.60 (5 appearances); Man of the Match awards: Wigan (2nd)

March effectively summed Yakou Meite up. The 23-year-old can be anonymous at times, but when he gets in the game, he’s a nightmare for defenders to deal with. His pace and power, epitomised in his goal against Preston, is a real asset to this Reading team. A tireless worker, Meite scored the most important goal of the season so far with a 97th minute winner against Wigan, and also made his debut for the Ivory Coast national team last month.

Matt Miazga

Average rating: 6.40 (5 appearances); Man of the Match awards: Ipswich (2nd), Stoke (3rd), Preston (3rd)

The Chelsea loanee has quickly become a fans favourite in Berkshire, and it’s not difficult to see why. Miazga continues to add calmness and quality to the defence, proving to be an upgrade on the unreliable Tiago Ilori. Standing at 6ft 4in, arguably his biggest strength is in the air, but the USA international is also comfortable with the ball at his feet - a huge bonus in Jose Gomes’ system.

Liam Moore

Average rating: 6.40 (5 appearances); Man of the Match awards: Stoke (1st)

Just as impressive as Miazga in the centre of defence, Moore remains a reliable figure in the backline. The 26-year-old is always on hand to put in a strong tackle at the right time, and more recently he has looked to drive the team forward, carrying the ball out of defence with confidence. March also saw Moore pick up his first Man of the Match award of the season against Stoke.
