It’s safe to say that it was an absolute disaster yesterday afternoon at Hull City as we suffered a 3-1 defeat.
It started so well with Lewis Baker scoring a screamer in the first half, but Hull came back emphatically in the second half to claim victory. With all the teams around us picking up points, we are back in our familiar spot of 21st, just one point ahead of Rotherham.
Here is what Jose Gomes had to say after the defeat, speaking to the official club website and Football.London.
Gomes on defeat
“The best way to reflect on this game is to split the analysis into two parts - the first half and the second half. The first half we were very solid defensively, we blocked the strongest points of the opponent and they didn’t find a way to our goal. My players did really well.
”At half-time, we had three points in our pocket. But in football, the Championship especially, if you relax just for a second the opponent will take advantage. In the second half, we lost our focus. We made some bad decisions and we made some bad actions and we gave two goals away.”
Gomes on missed chances
”We could have scored when we had a counter attack with lots of players, we could have scored when Barrow had a chance against the goalkeeper. If we score in those situations, everything in the game could change. But this is football. If you don’t kill the game when you get the chance, your opponent will kill you.
”Last week, we won, and we got a lot of positive results from the pitches where our direct opponents were playing - and last week we weren’t the best team in the world. This week, it is the opposite - we have lost and our direct opponents have won, and we are not the worst team in the world.
”So we have to keep an emotional balance, our focus, to allow the players to recover and be better on Wednesday. And hopefully we’ll get it right on Wednesday night.”
Gomes on Baker’s goal
“It was a very good goal and the way he’s been working, he deserved to score. But the taste of this goal would have been different if we had won the game.”
Gomes on Oliveira’s comeback
“He was tired because it was the first time he had played since being out. Regarding his physical condition, it was a good exercise for him. But I think he will be better in the next game and will have more energy. He can’t play against Norwich on Wednesday [due to loan].”
Gomes on teams around us picking up points
“It was a bad day - we lost and our direct opponents won. But this is the fight, this is the Championship and in the Championship this can happen.
“If you win two games you can run away from your position and if you lose you are dead again. Last week we were four points from Rotherham, now we are one point from them.”
Gomes on the dressing room after the match
“The players are down and losing does not give you confidence. We need a proper emotional balance to help the players be better on Wednesday. We cannot show so many faces in the same game.
“Some things like our missed chances and the way Hull scored after our mistakes, it was unlucky and they used these bad actions very well. Now is about helping the players to recover in the best and positive way we know.
“And we’ll see what happens. The difference sometimes between the teams is not what we see in the table. We can get a good result at Norwich.”
Gomes on bouncing back
“We must show character to recover and be ready. All the players have shown they are ready for this fight. A few weeks ago we had a similar situation and we gave a good answer so that’s what we will try and find again.”
