It has been a rollercoaster summer at Reading Football Club. A quiet start, focused on outgoings rather than incomings, gave way to a late spending spree and a difficult start to the season.
The Royals’ brother and sister owners Dai Yongge and Dai Xui Li have gradually become more hands-on and this summer was arguably their first ‘in charge’ of the club. It saw Yongge formally open the new Bearwood training ground and open up 15 away games to free coach travel.
In addition, roughly £12.5million was splashed on strikers George Puscas and Lucas Joao with Ovie Ejaria, Matt Miazga, Lucas Boye and Pele signed on loan. Birmingham City captain Michael Morrison was joined by goalkeeper Rafael and Charlie Adam in free deals.
A raft of familiar faces were put up for sale but Garath McCleary, Chris Gunter, Adrian Popa and Sam Baldock remain at the club while Liam Kelly and David Meyler were let go for free. Jon Dadi Bodvarsson recouped around £750k and a late deal for Danny Loader to join Wolves was binned apparently at the owners’ behest.
So how have are they doing? June saw them clock in a 3.83/5 rating - the highest since records began. Vote in the poll below and click this link if it doesn’t display.
