Reading have been drawn against Colchester United at home in the first round of the 2020/21 Carabao Cup.
The League Two side were quarter-finalists last season as they beat both Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur on penalties before bowing out to Manchester United. One familiar name in their squad is former Royal Callum Harriott.
The last meeting between Reading and Colchester also came in the first round of this competition back in the 2015/16 season, but it was the Essex-based side who were at home on that occasion. The Royals needed extra-time to win 1-0, as a rare Chris Gunter goal in the 115th minute secured victory. Current Reading goalkeeper Sam Walker started for the U’s but was stretchered off injured in the first half. Before that game, the two teams had not met since facing each other in Division Two in the 2001/02 campaign when Reading won both fixtures.
The Royals. have got through their last six EFL Cup first round ties, while last season we beat Wycombe Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle before being defeated on penalties by Wolves in round three.
The tie against Colchester is scheduled to be played on Saturday 5th September, with rounds two, three and four all then set to be completed in quick succession over consecutive midweek slots in September.
