Following a number of impressive performances in September, we are pleased to announce that you have chosen Luke Southwood as Reading’s player of the month. The academy graduate received 40% of the votes in last week’s poll, beating Tom Dele-Bashiru (32%), John Swift (22%) and Josh Laurent (6%).
It was a month in which Southwood did not start in goal, but Rafael’s hand injury meant that he was given an opportunity against Peterborough and he has not looked back. For someone with just one Championship appearance to his name before this season, Southwood has looked assured between the sticks and commanded his area with confidence.
The 23-year-old isn’t afraid to put his body on the line and seems to have relished the chance to make the number one shirt his own. Rafael is now back fit, but it’s hard to see the Brazilian coming back into the team anytime soon.
Despite having a makeshift defence in front of him, Southwood conceded just three goals in four appearances in September and kept Reading’s first clean sheet of the season against Middlesbrough.
After registering another shutout and winning man of the match in the first game of October against Cardiff, it seems like the goalkeeper is only going to continue going from strength to strength.
Congratulations Luke!
