The Royals put in the perfect team performance and picked up all three points against Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Tuesday night. Goals from Lucas Joao and a brilliant effort from Michael Morrison gave Reading the points, and ultimately the result for Bristol City saw the end of Dean Holden’s tenure at the club.

Reading remain in fifth with an eight-point gap to Cardiff City who sit seventh. Veljko Paunovic felt that it was the team performance that helped us bounce back to winning ways. After the game, he spoke to the official club website and GetReading.

Paunovic on the performance

“I’m proud of another fantastic performance and a victory against a team who can be very hard to beat and who were coming into the game in a difficult situation... we expected a reaction from them, we expected a tough game.

“But it was a great performance from our team - a team who have bounced back after a couple of defeats. But in just a couple of days we were capable of putting in a performance like that. We have learned how to bounce back. The only thing I was worried about was bringing back the team spirit and the togetherness. And I think that worked pretty well tonight.”

Paunovic on the goals

“Beautiful goals. There is always something that happens before and after we score a goal though - which is the team. The team supporting each other, creating opportunities... and in tonight’s case both Lucas and Morro played their part in executing the chances.

“I’m very happy for both of them - Lucas achieved a very important number tonight, but there are still many to come.

“And Morro’s goal was one of my favourites of the season so far. He doesn’t need to be encouraged to go forward because he’s a very brave man - and when he saw that gap, when he saw the space, he was determined and went through and executed it Messi-style.

“Everyone contributed to a team performance. And from the team performances, the players benefit individually. But we go forward one game at a time. We will enjoy tonight and then start working on the next one.”

Paunovic on Morrison’s Messi and Maradona comparisons

“That’s great and I’m very happy for him. Everyone is aware in our team that everyone contributed to the team’s performance and from the performance they benefitted individually.”

Paunovic on the post-match huddle

“It was encouraging and fixing up a couple of issues but the most important thing is what happens on the field stays on the field.”

Paunovic on belief and confidence going forward

“One game at a time. We’ll stick to our approach and our long-term picture, but we know what we have to do. We can enjoy this win but the turnaround is very quick but from tomorrow we have to start building from the next game.”

Paunovic on Josh Laurent’s injury

“Josh got a couple of knocks and was carrying them from the last few games. We decided to rest him and hopefully he can recover for the next game - as soon as possible.”
