A dismal night, a dismal performance and what the social scene and media made of it.

I’ve used this before but I will again - as the song goes: Tuesday, Bloody Tuesday. Reading seem to have a hoodoo on themselves in playing on a Tuesday. Well, at the moment, it's on playing any game at all.

Another away trip, another defeat. After Friday's game against Palace Reading hoped to bounce back with a performance at Brighton but it was not to be. The Brighton fans seemed moderately quiet on Twitter, however their comments revolved around our kit (shock), Reading "diving", ticket pricing and attendance, as well as getting rather annoyed at Sky with the times of their games!

Media

Well the Daily Mail haven’t let us down and they have a good report on the game. They reckon we looked good for 15 minutes and that our last clean sheet away from the Mad Stad was 7 months ago. Also that we have nothing to play for.

A rare mention from the ITV site makes a point that this is Brighton’s first win over us in 12 attempts, whilst over at Sky there’s the usual highlights package, although it's only 1m59 this week, and they reckon we huffed and puffed but didn’t actually do much. Down at the BBC and they reckon that chances for both teams were slim pickings and that we didn't take the chances that we got offered. There's also the interview with McDermott which is actually longer than the highlights!

Eurosport pick up Sky’s report whilst over at the Daily Star they have a different angle, saying that it was a tense, nervy affair and by the end of the game Reading looked like they were the side chasing promotion (perspective eh!). The Guardian and BT Sport both have limited write-ups for us, the former reckoning that Reading gave Brighton an early scare then Brighton held on to secure the win, whereas BT copy the comment about this being the Seagulls' first win over us in 12.

The local papers have interesting takes on the game, The Argus have an interview with Hughton saying how delighted he was with his forward line, whereas the Brighton and Hove Independent reckon that our poor set pieces were a contributing factor to Reading’s loss.

Over at GetReading and Jonathan Low this week seems to be a bit more positive saying it wasn't overall a bad performance, and one which was much better than the Palace game. However, with McDermott keeping the squad in the dressing room for a 45 minute "talk", it’s fairly obvious that he doesn’t share Jonathan's take on the match.

***

And that pretty much wraps it up - there's not a lot else we can say! It's on to Cardiff this weekend and hopefully a much needed three points. Onwards and upwards as the phrase goes!

Following on from his match report, James Cragg dishes the dirt on which Royals players were the worst in a sub-par display at Brighton.

Ali Al-Habsi: 6

Made some good saves when called upon, but never really had many shots that troubled him, aside from the goal.

Chris Gunter: 5

Jamie Murphy didn’t particularly challenge Gunter down the right hand side, but he was too slow in closing down James Wilson before his goal. That and the booking saw a below-average showing for the Welshman.

Anton Ferdinand: 5

Easily outpaced, especially for the goal, struggled at times to contain Sam Baldock but looked more assured in the second half.

Paul McShane: 6

Other than being taken out of the game completely by Baldock's pace for the goal, looked in control and stopped any real chances getting through to Al-Habsi.

Jordan Obita: 5

Anthony Knockaert beat him on too many occasions and he failed to get many crosses into the box considering how much of the ball he saw down that left flank.

Ola John: 4

Really disappointed with Ola. Showed no regard for defensive duties, his touch was woeful and Bruno had him in the tackle almost nine times out of 10.

Michael Hector: 6

After a shaky first few minutes he began to settle down, breaking up the play well; although he looked out of his depth in a 4-4-2, and really should have down better with a rebound he blazed over the bar from six yards out.

Danny Williams: 6

He really stepped up in the second half, doing what he does best by picking the ball up deep and running at the defence, although he rarely found a pass at the end of these mazy runs.

Hal Robson-Kanu: 6

Was obviously pinpointed as a threat as when he received the ball he quickly found about three Brighton players on him. Was left isolated by Gunter's inability to get forward, had a few glimpses of slight quality though.

Matej Vydra: 5

Should have done better with an early chance, looked uninterested and many passes sent astray. He made a few good touches here and there but nothing significant.

Yann Kermorgant: 6

Applied lots of pressure and won a lot of headers giving the Royals a real aerial threat that the rest of the team didn’t effectively utilize.

Substitutes

Garath McCleary: 6

Looked a real threat when he replaced Vydra, and did what John couldn’t: ran at full backs and beat them.

Deniss Rakels: N/A

Didn’t see much of the ball and didn’t have much time to make a difference but applied a lot of pressure.

The hosts rose to the automatic promotion spots having dealt the Royals another blow to add to a miserable week, making it three losses from the last three in all competitions.

James Wilson's first half strike was enough to condemn the Royals to a third successive defeat in all competitions as many of the players in the African Violet away strip looked uninterested and almost bored in some cases, imagine how the fans felt!

A strong team was fielded by Brian McDermott, with Yann Kermorgant coming back in to partner Matej Vydra in a two-man strike partnership, perhaps signalling his intent to finish the season strongly and dent Brighton’s promotion push. But it was to no avail as disappointingly, the performance of few really let down a Reading side that desperately lacked any desire.

First-Half: Weathering The Storm

From the opening few minutes you could really see how well Chris Hughton had set his Brighton team up, passing the ball with crisp accuracy, incredible high pressing on the Royals' back-line forcing errors and fair play to them. They deserve the second place position that they currently occupy. Ali Al-Habsi was called upon several times within the first 20 minutes and he duly delivered, stopping Beram Kayal’s drilled free kick before denying Dale Stephens superbly as the Brighton man went through one-on-one.

Arguably, well in my biased opinion, Reading had one of the better chances of the game in early proceedings as Vydra received a ball in the box and decided against hitting it early, instead turning on to his other foot before being tackled, subsequently Hal Robson-Kanu rolled the ball the wrong side of the post.

However, a swift counter-attack left the Royals in the lurch as Sam Baldock took both Anton Ferdinand and Paul McShane out of the game with a run from one side of the half to the other before playing inWilson. The striker, on loan from Manchester United, placed the ball in the opposite corner past a stretching Al-Habsi, a very decent finish.

Second-Half: Mediocrity

Given the amount that the 299 travelling Reading fans had to pay for tickets, these committed fans were not given their moneys-worth. A lack of passion and a sense that even the players believed that their season was all-but over, looked astonishingly apparent even before a ball was kicked.

The final possession stats at the end of the game read 48% Brighton – 52% Reading, although it didn’t feel like this. The Seagulls looked more assured and confident on the ball, passing themselves out of danger on several occasions. While, at the other end, there was simply not enough movement on the ball. No overlapping, no inside runs from midfielders to collect the ball when pressure was applied from Brighton, nothing.

The Royals picked up a lot of momentum in the second half, starting to threaten David Stockdale in between the sticks, but unfortunately all the pressure was without reward.

HRK got up well to meet a McCleary cross but with no real power behind it proved an easy save for Stockdale, before Ola John sliced a volley wide of the near post when we have come to expect him to do far better with those sorts of chances. The best chance of the second half, in Reading's eyes, was when a ball dropped to Michael Hector on the edge of the box, and he rattled a low shot against the post, and by that time, I started to believe it just wouldn’t be Reading's day.

Final Thoughts

By all means this was not a disastrous result, Brighton secured their fifth win in six, and moved up to an automatic promotion spot, so losing 1-0 away at one of the leagues high flyers isn’t too much of a problem. What really gets me is the jaded, lethargic display the Reading players put on, as in my opinion, I feel that if the Reading I know had turned up yesterday evening, we may have got a better result.

Next up is a trip to the Madejski on Saturday to take on play-off chasing Cardiff, another tough game, but I’m just hoping the players can shake this poor, dispassionate mentality they wore so well at the AMEX.

Reading fail to impress against promotion chasing Brighton, who win 1-0 at the AMEX Stadium courtesy of James Wilson's first half goal.

On a cold night on the South Coast, Reading were very slow to get into the game and Brighton had a number of chances early on. Anthony Knockaert hit the side netting before Ali Al-Habsi made a superb save to deny Dale Stephens.

But the Seagulls deservedly took the lead a few minutes later as they rapidly hit Reading on the break, with Manchester United loanee James Wilson finishing off a neat move to make it 1-0. The Royals' best chance of the half came when Matej Vydra's effort was only parried by David Stockdale, with Michael Hector fluffing his lines on the rebound.

The Royals failed to start the second half any better, and were let off the hook when Sam Baldock missed a golden chance to double the hosts' lead.

Soon after, Matej Vydra was replaced by Garath McCleary who nearly had an instant impact as he set up Hal Robson-Kanu whose header was saved Stockdale in our best chance to equalise. Ola John then went close as Reading began to show some attacking impetus, but the Dutchman scuffed his shot wide. The Royals clearly hadn't packed their shooting boots for the trip to the AMEX as Hector hit the post and Robson-Kanu's free-kick went over before the full-time whistle blew.

This is a Brighton team that went into the automatic promotion places courtesy of victory tonight, so it's not a disastrous result by any means, especially when for the majority of the game we were average at best.

Brighton & Hove Albion: Stockdale, Bruno, Goldson, Dunk, Rosenior, Knockaert (Lua Lua 77'), Stephens, Kayal, Murphy (Bong 77'), Baldock (Sidwell 88'), Wilson

Reading travel to the South Coast to face a Brighton side pushing for promotion; Phil Owtram previews the clash.

Brighton & Hove Albion FC

Form (all comps): DDWWL

Brighton midfielder Beram Kayal could return to the starting line-up for the visit of Reading. The Seagulls have no new injury concerns but defender Uwe Hunemeier (groin) and midfielder Solly March (knee) remain unavailable.

Unlike their Reading, Brighton have it all to play for going into this one as they sit level on points with Hull in third and two points off the automatic promotion places. The Seagulls have put a run of three consecutive defeats in December / January behind them and have now lost only once in their last ten games. Chris Hughton’s men have lost just three times at home in the league this season and incidentally they all came in a row, over that dodgy December / January period previously mentioned and have won twelve of the other fifteen.

Reading will be without defender Jake Cooper following his red card in the FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace. Royals midfielder George Evans and striker Yann Kermorgant return after being cup-tied in the last match.

Reading come back down to earth with a bang on Tuesday night as they return to league action against Brighton following their cruel FA Cup quarter final exit to Crystal Palace on Friday evening. McDermott’s men must now pick themselves up and face what looks like a pretty uneventful run-in with their Championship status all but secure and any hopes of a place in the play-offs long since extinguished. The Royals travel to the Amex Stadium without a win in their last three trips to the South Coast. Their last win came in the 2011/12 promotion season when a deflected free-kick from Ian Harte sent The Royals level on points with Southampton at the top of the table, how times have changed since then. Reading have won just once in their last twelve away games, a quite dismal record that has not been overlooked by this feature.

What The Opposition Think

"I think I said I expected us to finish 10th in my pre-season preview so to be top for much of the early part, unbeaten for the first 20 games, and still 4th going in to the run in with a real shot of automatic promotion is astounding."

You've taken the bold step of kicking out Oli Norwood for the trip to Brighton on Tuesday after the midfielder's tough patch in recent Reading games.

We'll start with the midfield then, as a four-man line up across the middle sees Stephen Quinn and Danny Williams edge out Norwood with just under 70% of the vote from our squad selector each, while the ex-Huddersfield playmaker gets just 43% of your backing.

Given that Matej Vydra and Yann Kermorgant have both stolen in with sizeable votes, 57% and 77% respectively, we'll set your team out in a 4-4-2. Hal Robson-Kanu and Ola John both comfortably took the wingers' choice, with Garath McCleary gaining less than a quarter of all votes for a starting spot.

In defence, Ali Al-Habsi unsurprisingly takes the number one shirt by a landslide 53 votes. In front of him, Michael Hector retains his spot thanks to 62.5% of your calls, just 7 more votes than Anton Ferdinand while captain Paul McShane slots in alongside him as your first-choice. Chris Gunter and Jordan Obita complete the XI, the left-back getting the most votes of any outfield player, 51.

Here's your team in full:

Back to Championship business we go and it's a clash with fourth placed Brighton at the AMEX Stadium. So what can we expect from tonight's hosts?

Jason from Brighton Only At Home was kind enough to give us his views on tonight's Championship game between Brighton & Reading at the AMEX Stadium.

How would you sum up Brighton's season so far?

Beyond my wildest expectations! I knew we'd do better than last season with Chris Hughton in charge and some very good new signings but we'd brought in a lot of new players and still had some of last season's dead wood lying around. I think I said I expected us to finish 10th in my pre-season preview so to be top for much of the early part, unbeaten for the first 20 games, and still 4th going in to the run in with a real shot of automatic promotion is astounding.

You had a bit of a wobble around the turn of the year but seem to have emerged on the other side, is there belief among the fans heading into the final quarter of the campaign?

I was on a podcast called The Albion Roar last week and we all agreed that it would now be a failure if we didn't make the playoffs. I'd reckon that's the general consensus.

When we met at the Madejski in October it was a match between two automatic promotion contenders but Reading haven't held up their end of the bargain since... What did you make of us that day and from what you've seen and read since?

I listened to it on the radio and it's always hard to form an opinion from that. It sounded a fairly even game but you've fallen away since then as you say. I think you're underachieving.

Which Seagulls player should we be worried about on Tuesday?

Beram Kayal. With him we tick. Without him we're dull. Anthony Knockaert may be brilliant or may be anonymous. If it's the former he'll cause even more problems than Kayal.

Any Reading player that worries you?

I never get these right! It's hard to know who you'll play. Kermorgant and Vydra have both caused us problems in the past but will either start?

Score prediction?

It's time to come clean. I said 1-1 in my preview for Fulham away and Leeds at home and we won both games. So I'm tactically and tactfully going for 1-1.

Finally, any advice for Reading fans making the trip?

The usual. No pubs near the ground so drink in town. Expect train queues and use the park and ride if you're driving. Enjoy the padded seats and be safe in the knowledge that whoever the referee is, he'll be on your side.
