Aggressive pressing tactics have cost Reading points in their last two games - how should the team deal with it?

On the face of it, the recent mini-break to Spain seems to have done Reading some good. Off the back of two pretty dire defeats (Millwall 2-0, Middlesbrough 2-1), the Royals have picked up a brace of solid score draws (Forest 1-1, Derby 3-3). We’re not out of the woods yet for sure, but the improvements are encouraging. However, there’s one trend that came out of the last two games that worries me: Reading’s inability to deal with an aggressive press.

Both at the City Ground in mid-week, and at the Mad Stad a few days later, Jaap Stam’s side looked comfortable on the ball in the first half - particularly in their own third where Liam Moore and Tiago Ilori not only had time to knock the ball around, but also to pick out players higher up.

Whether it was on purpose on not (I’d guess the latter), Aitor Karanka’s and Gary Rowett’s sides opted to sit back before the break and try to counter. Although Derby went in level at half time, Rowett admitted after the game that he wasn’t happy with how his players tried to counter Reading’s possession game.

“I had a real go at my players at half-time probably for the first time all season. They responded, the crowd were then getting frustrated with Reading playing out and we were causing them a lot of problems.”

Tiago Ilori and Vito Mannone have, probably fairly, attracted some stick both during and post-match for trying too hard to play out from the back after the break. The Rams’ frontline closed the pair down constantly in the opening quarter hour of the second half, forcing some glaring errors. This wasn’t just a case of Ilori and Mannone not playing well - Derby changed their approach and Reading couldn’t deal with it, at least until the Rams sat off again later on.

Considering the same thing happened earlier in the week - Forest also pressing high up in the second half - Jaap Stam really needs to be preparing his team for these scenarios. Interestingly, he seemed to suggest after the match that he himself is frustrated by the players’ decisions:

“If you need to defend, defend and just kick that ball over the stand and that’s it and you’re not thinking when that ball is in the air in our box, chest it, control it and hold it up 10 times and then kick it out.

“It’s simple. Sometimes players need to make decisions without thinking too much.”

To be fair to Stam, although it is his job to make sure his team can get past any obstacles that come their way, there’s only so much preparation you can do on the training field and in the dressing room. At the end of the day, it comes down to the decisions the players make in the moment.

Looking through Reading’s defence and midfield - Mannone, Gunter, Ilori, Moore, Richards, Bacuna, Kelly and Clement - there aren’t any calm, experienced heads who can take charge when the game shifts. Mannone (29) and Gunter (28) are the closest you get, and neither of them have played this style of football for more than 18 months or so.

The solution?

In the immediate term, Stam needs to sort this out by reiterating to Mannone and Ilori that sometimes they just need to give the ball a good hoof up the pitch - ideally before Tuesday’s game against Sheffield United, and definitely before the trip to Wolves next Saturday. After that, pray to the footballing gods that Tommy Elphick comes back sooner rather than later. He’s a calm, composed leader at the back who knows when a decision needs to be made.

Any style of football, particularly this one, carries a level of risk, so we’re not going to be able to cut out each and every mistake we make at the back. However, addressing the problem as best as we can could be one of the biggest factors behind where Reading finish this season.

Few expected both of Reading’s matches with Derby this season to be thrilling encounters but Saturday’s 3-3 draw meant that 12 goals had gone in across their clashes, leaving the Mad Stad faithful oddly entertained.

The talking points to take from an away draw by The Trent.

Richards’ goal-scoring return

Omar Richards made his return from injury against Nottingham Forest, slotting into the left-back position which allowed Leandro Bacuna to move into central midfield. The 19-year-old had impressed in his handful of Reading appearances prior to the game on Tuesday but suffered an injury against Brentford last month, cutting short his first team run.

However, Richards’ return was a real triumph for the youngster. He looked good defensively, contributing several important clearances and tackles throughout the game and capped off his performance with a well-taken first senior goal. In previous editions of Five Things I have talked about how big a loss Jordan Obita has been for Reading this season as they have been forced to rely on makeshift left-back’s like Bacuna, Tyler Blackett and Chris Gunter but with Richards seemingly impressing in every game he plays it looks as though he may well be the answer to that dilemma for the foreseeable future.

Solitary win in 12

This week’s depressing statistic is that Reading have won just the once in their last 12 league fixtures and with just 14 fixtures remaining the Royals are quickly running out of time to arrest their bad form. Reading still sit in 18th place in the table and are a precarious four points off the relegation zone and four points off Forest who sit one place above them in 17th.

The Royals are well and truly in a relegation battle with any three teams out of them, Bolton, Birmingham, Hull, Burton, Barnsley and Sunderland likely to be those who spend next season in League 1. Looking at Reading’s next fixtures suggests that their job will only get harder with their next three games coming against Derby, Sheffield United and Wolverhampton Wanderers who currently sit in fourth, seventh and first respectively.

With Wolves widely expected to be promoted as Championship winners and the other two sides well and truly in the play-off fight those three games will be as difficult as it comes for Reading who desperately need as many points as they can get.

Jaap Stam

Reading manager Jaap Stam has had an intriguing relationship with the Royals fans this season to say the least. The Dutchman has certainly not been short of a word or two for supporters when it comes to them showing their disappointment at results and in the aftermath of the Forest draw it was no different from Stam who addressed the fans’ frustration in an interview with BBC Radio Berkshire.

“We’re as frustrated as the fans if not more, but we need them to be our 12th or 13th man to help push us forward.

“It’s not just me who needs to cry out to them to support us, but the fans also know what they need to do. If the fans back us, everyone feels more comfortable in their performance on the pitch.

“But, if your own fans are booing you, shouting and calling out certain things, the players take that on board. They’re experienced professionals, but even at the absolute top level, players hear what fans say.”

Late equaliser

Considering that the next fixtures for the Royals will be against Championship high-flyers, the inability to hang on to the 1-0 lead they had against Forest is all the more infuriating because who knows how important those extra two points could have been come the end of the season?

Had Reading managed to hold on and not allow Lee Tomlin to score his last-gasp equalizer then the Royals would have a six point gap between them and the relegation zone and shorten the points difference between them and Forest to just the one, which would give them a lot more breathing space going into such a tough run of games.

Improved performance

That being said, Reading did turn in an improved performance compared to some of the dire showings Royals fans have been treated to in recent weeks. There were some impressive passages of play going forward and Chris Martin should really have given Reading an early lead after fewer than two minutes had passed after being found in the box by Modou Barrow only for the Derby loanee’s effort to fly harmlessly over the Forest goal.

That was the best of the chances for Reading who showed a combination of luck and determination to halt the Forest assault for as long as they did and, despite conceding the late winner, they did look like a better side than the one that lost to Middlesbrough. It seems the training camp in Spain has at least improved performance levels if not results.

The gaffer's take on Reading's 1-1 draw at The City Ground.

After a much needed break, the Royals faced Nottingham Forest at the County Ground where a positive result was needed. Reading played well in the first half and went in a goal up with Omar Richards scoring his first for the club. Forest came out all guns blazing in the second half and equalised late on through Lee Tomlin to secure a point.

Jaap Stam told the Official Club website after the game:

"We played very well in the first half and when you play like that you create a couple of very good opportunities to score.

“We got one, which is good, but we could have scored more. It’s not always easy to get the ball in the net because the opposition is fighting hard for it as well.

“In the second half you want to keep on going, but you know that they’re going to be pressing higher up the pitch and being a bit more aggressive.

“We didn’t quite have as much movement in the second half as we did in the first, which sometimes made it a bit easier for them to press us. And it was tough to get out at times, and they had opportunities and we had to work hard.

“The team worked hard for it, and they tried to do their best - as they always do! You want to cling onto that 1-0 to get the three points, but we know that we’re playing against a good side and that it’s not always easy to do that.

“It was important to get something out of the game, but we wanted more!"

We all remember when Jordan Obita scored his first goal for the Royals at Forest all those years ago, and history repeated itself with Richards scoring his first goal, Stam added:

“Omar is a good player. He is very comfortable on the ball, he goes forward, he has pace - and he can score a goal as well, as you’ve seen!

“Sometimes as a left-back you need to go forward so you’re there to finish it. That’s what he’s done and that’s good for him and the team as well.”

Next up are Forest’s rivals Derby County on Saturday as Reading return to the Madejski Stadium.

Do you think this woefully out of form Reading side can beat a woefully out of form Nottingham Forest side?

Unsurprisingly, the 2-1 defeat to Middlesbrough ten days ago was a result that many of you saw coming, with ten correct predictions of a Royals loss at the Riverside. Of those, MickeyTaker and Illinois_Royal got the scoreline bang on so bag themselves two points, whilst congratulations to RiskAverse too, who correctly guessed that the inconsistent Adama Traore would score the game’s first goal. The updated leaderboard is below.

After a weekend off, Reading travel to Nottingham Forest tonight, a side in almost equally bad form having scored in just one of their last nine Championship matches. All you have to do is guess the score of the game and say who you think will score the first goal in the comments below. A correct score earns two points, a correct result earns one point as does a correct first goalscorer.

To get the ball rolling, I’m going for a 1-0 win to Reading, with Chris Martin being the first goalscorer.

In a huge game for Reading, the Royals travel to the Midlands to face Nottingham Forest. Here is all the info you need on tonight’s opponents.

The Manager

Nottingham Forest’s current boss is Aitor Karanka. The 44-year-old has only been at the club for the past month having replaced the sacked Mark Warburton in January 2018. This is only the Spaniard’s second job as a professional football manager managing an English league club.

Managerial History

Karanka began his career as Spain’s Under-16 coach, where he managed the team for two years from 2008-2010.

He then moved to Real Madrid where he became the assistant manager to Jose Mourinho. A position he held for 178 games between June 2010 and July 2013.

Following Mourinho’s departure from Madrid to Chelsea, Karanka left the Spanish giants. It wasn't until November 2013 that Karanka was appointed Middlesbrough manager, following the sacking of Tony Mowbray.

During his time at the Riverside stadium, Karanka would lead his side to the 2014 Championship play-off final where his team lost to Norwich 2-0 at Wembley. However, all that pain of losing in a Championship play-off final would be put aside as in the following season, Karanka led his team to the Premier League by finishing second in the Championship.

But after managing 169 matches for Boro, Karanka was sacked following a poor run of results in the Premier League and concerns regarding his player style. He then moved to Forest in January 2018.

Style

In terms of his style of play, Karanka favours a slow passing style that intends to dominate possession and grind teams down. A similar style, you might say, to that of Jaap Stam.

With regards to formation expect Karanka to deploy a 4-2-3-1.

Top Scorer

Nottingham Forest’s current leading scorer is Kieran Dowell, who has nine goals in 31 Championship appearances.

On his day Dowell has the potential to cause problems. The 20-year-old was one of the best players on the pitch when Forest beat Arsenal 4-2 in the FA Cup third round, a game in which he scored in.

He’s even scored for his country, netting the winner over hosts South Korea in the group stage of the U20 World Cup last summer. The goal proved to be a crucial one, with England ultimately winning the tournament.

Club Captain

The Reds’ longest-serving player is Chris Cohen who has been at the club since completing a move from Yeovil in the summer of 2007.

Cohen has gone onto to make just under 300 appearances for the club, however injuries have restricted him in recent seasons.

Unfortunately, there have been reports that Cohen may have to retire with manager Aitor Karanka telling BBC Radio Nottingham that he felt: “it is not going to be possible for Cohen to return to action.”

Played For Both

Chris Gunter

Reading’s right back and current vice captain made over 155 appearances for the Reds in a three year spell between July 2009 and July 2012. In that time he scored two goals and got 12 assists to his name.

Following Reading’s promotion to the Premier League in 2012, the defender was signed that summer by then manager Brian McDermott. Since signing his initial contract, Gunter has made over 255 appearances for Reading and has made the right-back spot his own.

Garath McCleary

The winger made over 123 appearances for Nottingham Forest in a spell between June 2007 and July 2012. In that time he scored 13 goals and got 13 assists in all competitions.

McCleary is mostly remembered by Forest fans for his remarkable performance against Leeds in the 2011/12 season. In that gams he scored four goals as his side beat the team from West Yorkshire 7-3 at Elland Road,

Following the expiry of his contract at Forest, McCleary was snapped up by McDermott on a free transfer ahead of the Royals’ ill-fated Premier League campaign. He has so far scored 26 goals in 237 appearances with the most memorable coming at Wembley as the Royals lost to Arsenal 2-1 in the FA Cup semi-final.

Key Man

The key man that Reading fans traveling up to the Midlands should keep an eye on is Ben Watson. Watson, who plays in central midfield, brings a wealth of experience to the Forest side having made over 145 appearances in the Premier League for the likes of Wigan, Watford and Crystal Palace.

Additionally, Watson brings a winners mentality having scored the winner for Wigan as the Latics beat Manchester City 1-0 in the 2013 FA Cup final. On his day, Watson can cause teams plenty of problems with his passing. In fact in his last appearance the former Wigan man had a pass success rate of 71 percent.

As a result, Karanka will look to use the former Wigan man to keep possession for his team as well as using Watson’s leadership skills to organise the Forest midfield.

Therefore the likes of Joey van den Berg and George Evans will need to keep a close eye on the 32 year-old.

Likely XI

Aitor Karanka could make changes following his sides 0-0 draw at Burton Albion last time out.

Eric Lichaj the man who scored two spectacular goals against Arsenal in the FA Cup is suspended having been sent off against the Brewers. So new signing Juan Rafael Fuentes could make his debut at left-back.

Here’s how Nottingham Forest could line up (4-2-3-1).

Costel Pantillmon (GK); Tendayi Darikwa, Tobias Figueiredo, Danny Fox, Juan Rafael Fuentes; Ben Watson, Jack Colback; Matty Cash, Kieran Dowell, Joe Lolley; Ben Brereton.

Can Jaap Stam lead his team out of the woods against Forest?

Another week, another six pointer? In what is becoming an all too familiar occurrence for Royals fans, Reading’s visit to the City Ground will be one enshrouded by whispers of ‘must win’, murmurs of unrest and fears that another defeat could send the side hurtling towards a place within the Championship’s bottom three.

Having returned from their Spanish warm weather training camp on Saturday, the Royals players will be all too aware of the frosty atmosphere currently circulating amongst fans. It is an atmosphere that only a result, and indeed, a big performance against Aitor Karanka’s men, will go any way towards thawing.

Reading

Form (all comps): DLWLL

With Tuesday night’s game against Forest the first in a run of six matches in 18 days, a run that features fixtures against Derby, Sheffield United, Leeds and Wolves, the Royals will know the importance of picking up points against the teams around them ahead of the final run-in.

One win in their last five means that Jaap Stam’s Reading are as close to the relegation zone as they are to Forest, who rest just one place and four points above the Royals in 17th.

Reading’s precarious position is made all the more difficult with an increasingly extensive injury list limiting Stam’s options ahead of Tuesday night. Absences for club captain Paul McShane, loan signing Tommy Elphick and Jordan Obita mean Stam may have to call upon Tyler Blackett once again to sure up a threadbare Royals’ backline, whilst John Swift also remains sidelined in midfield.

Nottingham Forest

Form (all comps): LLLLD

Unlike the Royals, Forest did react to their league struggles with a managerial change, with former Boro boss Aitor Karanka now taking the helm at the City Ground following Mark Warburton’s departure. Much like the Royals however, they are continuing to struggle at the foot of the table and come into Tuesday night’s game on a poor run of form.

No win in five means that the honeymoon period is most certainly over for the former Real Madrid centre-back, who will look to the fixture against Reading as a chance to quell any chatter regarding his side’s slide towards an unwanted relegation battle.

However, Forest also find themselves in the midst of an injury crisis due a sickness bug sweeping through the City Ground. Michael Mancienne missed the weekend’s 0-0 at Burton Albion through illness, with Daryl Murphy and Apostolos Vellios also falling foul of the same ailment. Karanka will also be without Joe Worrall and Ashkan Dejagah who miss out through knee problems, whilst defender Eric Lichaj will also be absent through suspension.

Prediction

With both sides in dire runs of form, Tuesday night should make for an incredibly tense affair. Given the pressure on both teams, and indeed both managers, it may be a case of two sides, too afraid to lose, simply cancelling each other out.
