This is the end, my only friend...

All good things have to come to an end and the smallest ever nation’s run at the 2018 World Cup was finished on Tuesday night after a 2-1 defeat to Croatia.

Sadly for Reading fans, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson didn’t get on the pitch after failing to get a shot in versus Nigeria in the previous game, and Heimir Hallgrímsson opted to start with Alfred Finnbogason in Rostov-on-Don before substituting on striker Bjorn Sigurdarson as the game progressed.

However there was some good news from a Royals perspective as Gylfi Sigurdsson made amends for his penalty miss against the Super Eagles with a composed finish from the spot, making the attacking midfielder the first Reading academy graduate to ever score at a World Cup.

The question now is, who will be the next Royals player to appear at a World Cup, perhaps in four years’ time? Bodvarsson again? Adi Popa? Danny Loader? Only time will tell.

Can Iceland reach the knockouts?

It was a momentous occasion for Jon Dadi Bodvarsson on Friday as he made his World Cup debut but sadly his Iceland team couldn’t push on from their solid point versus Argentina, and lost 2-0 to Nigeria.

As mentioned in the last Jon Dadi Watch, his best bet to start was if the minnows used their increased confidence to go 4-4-2 versus the Super Eagles and that’s exactly what happened, however the Reading striker failed to get off a shot before being substituted on 71 minutes.

Still, he won five aerial battles and completed 68 percent of his passes, touching the ball 30 times, which is the same number as strike partner Alfred Finnbogason in his 90 minutes. Similarly, replacement Bjorn Sigurdarson certainly lacked an impact and coach Heimir Hallgrímsson has a decision to make about who leads the line next time out.

Permutations

The Group D sitrep is that Croatia are through and almost certainly as group winners, on six points, with Nigeria on three ahead of Iceland and Argentina, both with one point.

Tuesday evening (19:00 UK time) sees the final games take place on BBC4 with Iceland heading to Rostov-on-Don to face Zlatko Dalic’s side, who are set to make changes and rest some of their star men ahead of the last-16.

That presents a glimmer of hope and Iceland know a draw or defeat will knock them out regardless, with a victory sending them into the knockouts if Nigeria draw with Argentina and Iceland win by two or more goals. Furthermore, a win over Croatia will do the trick if Argentina also claim victory by the same or a smaller margin as Bodvarsson’s team.

Will he get on the pitch?

June 22 is a big day for Iceland who can now fully believe in their team’s chances of getting out World Cup Group D. However, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s role in their clash against Nigeria is up in the air.

Heading down to mossie-filled Volgogard, their opponents are Nigeria and the Super Eagles need at least a point following an opening loss to Croatia. It promises to be a fascinating encounter, given both sides’ intent and confidence in claiming the points.

Iceland coach Heimir Hallgrimsson: “We expect to win. They are a physically strong team, quick, good athletes all of them, a big running capacity. They play direct and are a very strong attacking side. I have to give credit to their coach for their organisation.”

No matter the result, Iceland will be in with a shout of qualification come the final day. However, Croatia’s win means Nigeria need a point to keep their hopes alive.

Yes, yes that’s all very well. But will JDB play?!

If Jon Dadi does get on the pitch, it will come exactly 12 years after Bobby Convey played against Ghana for the US in Germany 2006, the last time a Reading man appeared at a World Cup.

However. Alfred Finnbogason is set to start again after netting versus Argentina and it was telling that Iceland turned to Bjorn Sigurdarson as the striker off the bench on Saturday.

Opening match success for Dadi-less Iceland.

It was a great day for Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s Iceland on Saturday as his nation claimed an unlikely point against tournament hopefuls Argentina. Sergio Aguero’s opener was cancelled out by an equaliser from Alfred Finnbogason, with little-known player Lionel Messi missing a second half penalty.

How did the game unfold?

Unfortunately, Dadi-less. Iceland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson picked a side that included Reading heart-throb Gylfi Sigurdsson - who became the first Royals academy graduate to play in the World Cup - but there was no room for Bodvarsson.

Iceland XI: Halldórsson, Saevarsson, Árnason, R Sigurdsson, Magnússon, Berg Gudmundsson, Gunnarsson, Hallfredsson, Bjarnason, G Sigurdsson, Finnbogason

With 19 minutes on the clock, Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero found the net for the first time at the World Cup, scoring this sweet strike:

GOAL! Aguero controls the ball impeccably, spins and fires in his first ever World Cup goal with a rocket of a left-foot shot pic.twitter.com/yKiHHEuf7r
— ITV Football (@itvfootball) June 16, 2018

However, the Argentine lead would only last for four minutes, with Finnbogason touching home from close range after a dangerous Gylfi cross.

GOAL!

Despite their talented XI, Argentina struggled to break down a resolute Iceland side who were well-drilled into a solid 4-4-2. Think Burnley, but with more names ending in “son”. Messi’s side went on to register a whopping 78% possession and 27 shots in the match, but couldn’t find another way past a goalkeeper who, before playing professional footie, used to be a film director and worked on Iceland’s 2012 Eurovision entry.

Side note - it wasn’t the catchiest of tunes, and had the kind of dark, depressing tone that reminds of you of Reading’s 2017/18 campaign.

Although Argentina were given a glorious chance to make it 2-1 on 64 minutes, ‘keeper Halldórsson flung himself to his right to deny Messi and keep the scores level at 1-1. Gritty Iceland, who held out for the rest of the game, replaced injured goal-scorer Finnbogason on 89 minutes - former Reading target Bjorn Sigurdarsson coming on rather than actual Reading player Bodvarsson.

What next?

Iceland’s next game comes against Nigeria on Friday at 4pm (UK time). Although Iceland probably aren’t expected to make it out of the group, they would go a long way towards progression with three points over the Super Eagles - who are due to face Croatia at time of writing.

As for Dadi, he could be in line for match action should Finnbogason’s injury keep him out of the next match - particularly if Iceland opt to go two up top.

The World Cup is upon us.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s Iceland will begin their quest to go all the way on Saturday with a 14:00 (16:00 local time) clash against Argentina in the Russian capital’s Spartak Stadium, live on ITV. Here’s everything you need to know about the Reading striker’s build-up to the World Cup opener.

Preparations

As expected, all the pre-match build-up has been focused on Argentina, who cancelled their final pre-tournament friendly with Israel due to protests and go to the World Cup off the back of a 4-0 win over Haiti on May 30 and a 6-1 hammering away to Spain back on March 27.

One key element to Jorge Sampaoli’s thoughts has, according to Associated Press, been Iceland’s height advantage. The minnows are the tallest team going to Russia with an average height of just over 6 foot (Jon Dadi is 6ft 2in) with Argentina among the shortest, weighing in at just over 5ft 10in on average.

“Over the past week, we have been working on specific issues like set pieces,” Argentina goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman.

It means that centre-backs Nicolas Otamendi and Marcos Rojo shouldn’t be the ones looking after Bodvarsson and Iceland’s other tall threats at key set-pieces, where central midfielders Maximiliano Meza and Lucas Biglia will have greater responsibility. It certainly means high balls into the box are to be a big asset for the islanders in Moscow.

For Iceland, Bodvarsson’s role in the game depends on whether coach Heimir Hallgrimsson opts for a two-man attack or five-man midfield, the latter potentially seeing Alfred Finnbogasson win out for a place in the line-up. Reading academy graduate Sami Fridjonsson, also in the squad after impressing with Norwegian club Valerenga, is set to be on the bench.

Odds

Iceland are back out at 12/1 with some bookies (via Oddschecker) to beat La Albiceleste with the draw going at 4/1, trailing behind a 4/11 Argentina victory. It’s safe to say their immaculate Euro 2016 is not something many predict to happen again. To win the trophy, Iceland’s odds are 300/1, so their chances are rated as worse than Peru’s but the same as Egypt’s and better than Japan’s.

Of Jon Dadi himself, he can be snapped up at 18/1 to notch the first goal on Saturday and 13/2 to register at any time. If you really want to back the Reading man, he’s 750/1 to win the Golden Boot. As always, and especially with that last one, #GambleAware.

Trivia

Should he get on the pitch, Bodvarsson will break a run of 11 years, 11 months and 358 days without a Reading man playing in the World Cup, when Bobby Convey played for the USA in a 2-1 defeat to Ghana on June 22, 2006. Adam Federici was called up by Australia in 2010 but was reserved to the bench throughout their stay in South Africa.

Your one stop shop for Iceland’s main man (no, not that one).

It’s time for that World Cup optimism to seep through and consume your body. Yes, it’s less than a week until the biggest tournament in sport kicks off and we’ll be keeping on top of Reading’s sole representative in Russia throughout his stay.

Should you not support England, for whatever reason (such as not being English. Tut.) then there’s no excuse for not getting behind Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.

The story so far

Having taken six points off Turkey, four off Ukraine and three off Croatia, the Strákarnir Okkar won Group I in qualification and entered their maiden World Cup. However, since then they have gone on a somewhat worrying period of one draw and three defeats.

Bodvarsson started and played an hour as Norway won 3-2 in Reykjavík on June 2, the striker departing with the score at 1-1, while he came off the bench just before Iceland squandered a two-goal lead to draw with Ghana on Thursday night.

Despite the results, it is clear he remains among the first-choice players likely to start in Russia, as is Alfred Finnbogason of Bundesliga team Augsburg with the pair ahead of another former Wolves man, Bjorn Bergmann Sigurdarson.
