Fortress Madejski is reappearing...

After a week of turmoil after the Swansea City game, it looked odds-on that a defeat against Bristol City would condemn Paul Clement to the dole office, given the headlines from the papers last Sunday.

After sorting the differences between the club and Modou Barrow, he sprung his next surprised by handing Andy Rinomhota his first league start in a Reading Shirt. Questions have to be asked about more established Reading stars with the lesser-spotted David Meyler and Dave Edwards nowhere near the team or fitness respectively. Indeed, John Swift was reduced to the bench, and when Saeid Ezatolahi is fit the team selection in midfield will be interesting.

The Bristol fans came in numbers and while they didn’t always cover themselves with glory they seem to be very passionate around their team. The social media afterwards was a quite interesting read - someone ought to remind the Bristol City fans that they are 13th in the table and not in the relegation zone!

Media

I was a little surprised that, given this was a five-goal match and the media darlings in Leeds United didn’t play till Sunday, there wasn’t a little more coverage for us.

A quick run through what was around sees Bristol Live not overly impressed by the fare served up by Bristol. Can we also ban the use of the phrase ‘narrow’ or ‘fine’ margins? Jeez, who taught these managers in media training school?

Sports Mole mostly carry interviews with the managers, and Clement in particular calling this the the platform that we build from. Oh how many times have we heard this...

Football.London are probably the happiest they have been for a while, praising Andy Rinomhota in particular for his performance. It’s also good to see that, as F.L point out, Paul Clement got a win on his 100th managerial appearance.

The BBC reckon Modou Barrow coming back was pivotal. I’m not convinced myself, and think they are struggling for headlines. They also say that we clung on and highlight the fact that this was our first pair of back-to-back home wins since the first two matches of Clement’s reign last season.

Summary

Is it a stay of execution or the start of a new dawn? I really don’t know and if I were being honest I’m probably not bothered which it is. If it’s the former then any negative result against Ipswich Town will likely see Clement getting his P45. If it’s the latter then fair play as he has turned it around - at least temporarily.

There were a couple of positives from the game, the obvious in Rinomhota making a solid debut and rightly getting his man of the match award, but also a decent display from Liam Kelly returning to his quarterback position and he did probably have his best game of the season.

The toxicity from previous games wasn’t there although there were a few boos at half time, seeing as we managed to go ahead and get pegged back quickly after. Guess what, with decent play and a couple of goals there was a little bit of a better atmosphere by full time.

Injuries have decimated the team this year, which shouldn’t be an excuse given the size of the squad. However, on Saturday there was good and bad news on the injury front. Losing your top scorer is never good and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson looks like he’s out for a good few weeks, then to see Yakou Meite go off injured wasn’t what we wanted.

On the plus side was Garath McCleary continuing his return to the squad, and to be fair he injected the side with tempo and direct play. To be honest this version of McCleary looks like the one of a few seasons ago that terrorised full-backs rather than recent seasons where he has looked off the pace.

There’s been a few time this season where we have thought we have turned the tide only to be proved wrong. I am hoping that this isn’t one of them and if we do get a positive result against Ipswich that will be three home wins on the bounce, a far cry from earlier in the season.

Maybe we do need to give Paul Clement time and space. If we get a win next time out then he’s probably OK until at least Christmas. But, if it’s a defeat or draw, then I expect he will go the following day. Either way this season has turned from one of optimistic thinking and looking forward, to one of praying for mid-table obscurity.

How the home faithful reacted to some of the key talking points from Bristol City’s visit to the Madejski Stadium on Saturday.

For much of the week it didn’t look like Paul Clement would survive to see his team face Bristol City. But, sure enough, he was in the dugout as Reading battled to a crucial three points. Yakou Meite, Liam Kelly and Leandro Bacuna grabbed the goals for Reading, with Kelly’s being particularly eye catching.

However, no Reading game is complete at the moment without a few pieces of dodgy defending as the Royals once again gifted two goals to the opposition. It wasn’t the prettiest performance, but it was a vital three points. Like it or not, it’s a result that has bought Clement a bit more time as manager as well.

Here is how the Reading fans reacted to some of the key talking points from Saturday afternoon...

Andy Rinomhota

One of the many things Clement has been criticised for is the lack of academy products being brought through under his reign as manager. But he handed Andy Rinomhota his first league start on Saturday and the 21 year-old fully justified that decision.

Particularly in the first half, everything good that Reading did seemed to involve the young midfielder.
An in-depth look at Reading’s 3-2 win over Bristol City on Saturday.

There’s plenty to unpack from Saturday’s 3-2 win over Bristol City. It was a huge a win for Reading, a relief for Paul Clement and hopefully the start of better things to come, but two players stood for me for different reasons: Liam Kelly and Yakou Meite. The former played a very different tactical role in a new-look midfield, whilst the second is quickly establishing himself as Reading’s leading man.

Paul Clement rebalances the midfield

Since Saeid Ezatolahi picked up an injury in the last international break, Reading have been crying out for a dedicated holding midfielder. That role is so crucial to any side, particularly this one, as it not only protects the defence effectively but also gives the team presence in the middle of the park and allows other midfielders license to push forwards.

In recent weeks, Leandro Bacuna has been the player given that role. It’s one he’s fairly familiar with, having lined up there a few times under Jaap Stam last season, but he’s looked ineffective there under Paul Clement. Although he’s got the energy and strength to get about the pitch and put in tackles, he lacks the composure and reading of the game that Ezatolahi excels at.

I for one had looked to David Meyler as the natural replacement for Ezatolahi - he fits the bill as a tough-tackling, no-nonsense midfielder who can protect the defence, even if he’s been below-par this season and lacks the technical ability of others. Interestingly, Clement decided to overlooked Meyler yet again (the Irishman hasn’t played since the 2-1 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on September 1 when he was withdrawn after an hour.

Instead, the manager went with Liam Kelly who, to be fair, played in that role extensively in the 2016/17 play-off campaign, but not much since (under both Jaap Stam and Paul Clement). However, the decision paid off. In relation to Meyler’s display against Sheffield Wednesday, Kelly (against Bristol City):

Made more interceptions (3-1)

Attempted more tackles (3-1)

Put in more blocks (2-1)

He also had a bigger impact on the ball despite Reading enjoying less possession against Bristol City (41%) than they did against Sheffield Wednesday (51%). Kelly touched the ball more often than anyone else in the home side on Saturday (73), but Meyler’s 50 was bettered by four others (Chris Gunter, Liam Moore, Tiago Ilori, Andy Yiadom and Leandro Bacuna).

Liam Kelly’s touches vs Bristol City (home)

Kelly capped off a promising performance with a major involvement in Reading’s two goals before the break. For the first, his whipped delivery into the box squirmed through for Yakou Meite to finish, and the second was something very special indeed.

Reading FC

Liam Kelly’s rocket

Another positive effect of playing a defensive midfielder who, well, isn’t Leandro Bacuna, is that you can play Bacuna higher up the pitch. He’d looked a lot more promising in the handful of games when Ezatolahi’s anchor role had given him license to push forwards in support of the striker, so restoring him to that part of the midfield (thanks to Kelly) was welcome viewing. The former Villa man even ended the game with more shots than any other Reading player (four out of the team’s eight on the day).

In the long run we’ll still need the Iranian back in the fold. Kelly will always come short (pun unintended) against more physical opposition and those that like to lump the ball into the box. He wouldn’t have been very effective in that position for the 3-1 win over Millwall for example.

Yakou Meite is maturing

A regular run of matches in the first had been a long time coming for the Ivorian, restricted to the bench for much of 2016/17 before being sent out on loan to Sochaux in 2017/18. However, Paul Clement has shown plenty of faith in him - Meite’s 1111 league minutes this season are beaten only by Andy Yiadom (1440), Liam Moore (1260) and Leandro Bacuna (1202) - and that faith is starting to be paid off.

Meite’s eighth-minute goal on Saturday was his fifth in all competitions so far, adding to what’s starting to look a little like a purple patch. Having grabbed a brace against Millwall, he also netted a consolation at Birmingham City before decisively slamming the ball past Frank Fielding on Saturday - the kind of instinctive finish that any goalscorer needs to make a key part of their repertoire. Even when he doesn’t score, Meite reliably works hard on and off the ball, and usually stands out against his teammates in overall poor Reading displays.

Reading much into his performance on Saturday wouldn’t be fair (he only got 37 minutes before being withdrawn for Garath McCleary), but his stats across the entire season deserve credit and stand up well against his peers. Below is how he compares to fellow strikers Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Sam Baldock, and creative spark John Swift.

Stats from WhoScored

Championship stats for Meite, Bodvarsson, Baldock and Swift

Meite compares very well to Bodvarsson, the other contender to lead the line for Reading as a target man. Although they win aerial balls at a similar rate, Meite shoots far more often than Bodvarsson, makes more dribbles and is brought down by the opposition more regularly. Those are encouraging stats, and suggest that the former PSG forward is starting to turn his raw physical attributes into reliable output.

He should also have a good chance to continue that form, should he brush off Saturday’s ankle injury. Jon Dadi Bodvarsson tweeted on Sunday that he’s broken a bone in his lower back, probably making the lone forward role Meite’s to lose.

How Saturday’s match unfolded, with The Royals holding on for a vital three points against Bristol City.

Just when you think Reading are headed for disaster, they sometimes find a way to surprise you. That hasn’t happened too often this season - when things have looked like turning out badly they usually have - but it did on Saturday. Going into half-time, it looked like The Royals were playing to the same old script: some promising moments let down by sloppy errors.

It’s credit to the players, and of course to an under-pressure Paul Clement, that they ripped that script up and threw it in the bin. Reading were far from at their best against Bristol City, but they did the most important thing: brushing off a frustrating first-half to edge themselves ahead in the second and not fluff their lines a third time. It wasn’t pretty, and we sure had to dig in, but we got there - just.

Team selection

Sam Walker came back in for the injured Anssi Jaakkola (Vito Mannone is also out), with John O’Shea again partnering Liam Moore at the heart of the defence, flanked by Andy Yiadom and Tyler Blackett.

Clement changed things up in the middle of the park, a problem position for Reading in recent weeks. In an attempt at rebalancing the midfield, Andy Rinomhota was swapped in for John Swift, Liam Kelly pushed back to his old ‘quarterback’ role in front of the defence and Leandro Bacuna deployed further forward to play to his strengths.

Rounding out the team, Yakou Meite started as the target man up top, with Modou Barrow (his disagreements with the manager now brushed off) and Sam Baldock on the right and left flanks respectively.

First half

Reading got off to the perfect start after just eight minutes. Bristol City cleared a free-kick that had been swung in from the right, but Liam Kelly’s ball back in found its way through to Yakou Meite who decisively slammed home with his left foot.

1-0 up, the home side looked confident and started to push forward well, even if they didn’t create anything clear-cut to double their advantage. Both Liam Kelly and Leandro Bacuna put shots just off target from outside the area, although perhaps the former was just finding his range? (More on that later...)

Nonetheless, it would be 1-1 on 23 minutes. A cross came over from Reading’s right which was headed out first by John O’Shea then Leandro Bacuna, but Sam Baldock’s rash challenge gave Jack Hunt acres of space to slide in Marlon Pack who converted with ease.

Jack Hunt (left) set up Marlon Pack (right)

The visitors would go close to making it 2-1 later on in the half, Sam Walker saving from Niklas Eliasson at his near post, Famara Diedhiou firing just over (having again been given the freedom of the County of Berkshire to turn and shoot on the edge of the box) and Matty Taylor’s header blocked at point-blank range by Walker.

Down the other end there was more bad news for Reading. Yakou Meite had already gone down several times with an ankle injury, but was finally forced off on 37 minutes. That meant a rejig up front; Baldock going from left wing to striker, Barrow staying on the right and Garath McCleary lining up on the left (although the two wingers would swap side at various points in the match).

The first half wasn’t done for action just yet though. Liam Kelly did well to find space on the edge of the box before sumptuously curling the ball into the far corner - a goal of absolute beauty. It’s a huge shame that some of our best attacking play was almost immediately undone by some of the worst defending; a series of frustrating errors when Reading had several chances to clear the danger.

Eliasson (allowed too much space by Yiadom) puts a cross in, headed away by Moore,

Another deep cross from Walsh, lofted over the six-yard box from right to left,

Eliasson wins the header (against Yiadom), putting the ball back into the six-yard box for Taylor to flick on (unchallenged by Moore),

Brownhill beats Blackett to the ball and tucks home.

It was dire defending, but nothing we’re not used to by now. Considering at least three players are at fault for at least part of the build-up play, it can’t be pinned on any individual defender. Paul Clement rightly highlighted the problem in his post-match comments and correctly pointed out that we need to remove these errors if we’re to push up the table, but why hasn’t that happened already?

Second half

The visitors would push forward more in the second half, meaning Reading had to rely on the counter-attack if they were to edge themselves in front and Leandro Bacuna, bursting forward from midfield, had two bites of the cherry. Initially he robbed the ball off City just outside the area, giving Reading a two-on-one, but the Curacao international failed to slide in Baldock, the chance going begging.

However, 13 minutes later, he made amends for his error. On another counter, Bacuna played the ball out to Barrow on the left wing before finding space in the box. The Gambian cleverly pulled the ball back for Bacuna who slid it past Fielding. 3-2 Reading, against the run of play.

From there on in, Reading went into rearguard action mode. There were nervy moments when Brownhill hit the post, Diedhiou air-kicked after Walker flapped at a cross, and Weimann’s shot was strongly parried by Walker, but we just about held on. The team brushed off their previously dire defending to shut out the opposition, showing the same resilience they did against Millwall.

Credit should also go to the (diminished) home crowd who really got behind the team in the closing stages. Sensing a vital league win, the fans upped the volume and roared the team on, cheering every tackle won and corner gained as if they were a goal.

Closing thoughts

Credit where it’s due, Paul Clement got it right on Saturday. Some awful first-half defending will badly need rectifying ahead of Ipswich Town’s visit next weekend, but the under-pressure manager delivered when it counted.

Injuries to a number of players meant team selection would always be tough, but the calls he made paid off. In particular, his decision to rebalance the midfield by dropping Kelly back to a deeper position and deploying Bacuna and Rinomhota as an energetic, combative pair higher up the pitch gave the team more presence in central areas than it has previously had.

Elsewhere, the experience of John O’Shea at the back and Garath McCleary in advanced areas proved vital in ensuring Reading saw out their one-goal advantage. Their know-how was valuable, and has been missed when we’ve blown loads previously, like against Derby County at home, Blackburn Rovers and West Brom (both away).

Praise should also go out to Yakou Meite for scoring his fifth goal of the season - he’s now just two behind Jon Dadi Bodvarsson - so Reading will be praying the first-half injury that forced him off the pitch isn’t too serious. Another youngster, Andy Rinomhota, oozed class and composure in his first league start for the club and will be hoping for a run of starts.

He admitted/joked after the game that it’s bought him at least another week of employment at Reading but, whether that’s the case or not, the win - and the manner in which it came - has eased the pressure. Saturday’s game had been talked-up as a ‘must win’ and Clement ensured the team played to that occasion.

Next weekend’s visit of rock-bottom Ipswich Town is surely another vital game, with both struggling sides looking to it as a realistic source of three points. Reading haven’t won back-to-back league fixtures in quite some time and they won’t get a better opportunity than this.

The manager’s take on why Reading came out on top against Bristol City.

The Madejski Stadium is slowly becoming a fortress again as the Royals picked up a very important three points against Bristol City with a 3-2 victory. With three wins out of the last four home games, scoring three goals in all of them, confidence is slowly coming back and Saturday’s performance was overall very positive, but there are still improvements to make.

Yakou Meite gave the Royals the lead, but Bristol City equalised shortly after through Marlon Pack. Liam Kelly scored an absolute belter but in typical Reading style, City equalised just minutes later and of course, just before half time through Josh Brownhill. Even though Reading were under a lot of pressure in the second half, they took the lead for the third time through Leandro Bacuna and held on for a huge three points.

I think it is fair to say that Paul Clement was a very relieved man after the match. He told the official club website and GetReading “it was a massive game”.

Clement on pressure

“I used up a lot of mental pressure this week because I felt there was a lot of pressure on this game, pressure which has been building because of our form and results, so I’m delighted for everybody involved at the club - our owners, the people who work behind the scenes and of course the players.”

Clement on the players

“The players stood up and were counted this afternoon. They put in a massive effort - that’s what I asked of them. Blood and sweat, leave it on the pitch.

“Show the fans that you’re really working and that you want it. They did that and they got the reward for it.”

Clement on the scoreline

“It’s the same scoreline and pattern as what happened at Preston - we led twice and they came back twice. But again we still had the mental resolve to keep going and try to get the result - and we did.“

Clement on the game

“Their timing of their second goal could have been a big blow for us mentally, but we responded well to it. We began level-pegging in the second half, we went again, and although they came close at the end, we were in the right place at the right time when it was required.

“And we scored three really good goals. Our goal scoring record is pretty good, considering our position in the league.

“The issue for us is some of the mistakes defensively that have cost us being the wrong side of fine margins and also in games when we’re under pressure. If we can tighten up defensively and be more solid and keep clean sheets, we’ll begin to move up the table because we’ve got a lot of quality going forward.

“Thankfully, it went the right way for us today. So, yes, perhaps I’ll sleep better tonight. But I’m sure I’ll be back to the sleepless nights thinking about the next one come Sunday and Monday night!”

“I said to them that 80 per cent of what we had done was really good but we had made two big errors.

“It’s gone now - we have to treat the game as 0-0. If we can still concentrate and do the right things defensively then we will create and we will score. And that’s the way it ended up.

“The players were catching their breath and I gave them four or five minutes to do that. I think about what I’m going to say because that’s important.

“We went through what we could have done better and what we did well, and reinforce those things. And it worked out in this game.”

Clement on Andy Rinomhota

“He played really well. He’s had to be patient for his opportunity and he has been. But he’s a fantastic professional and boy every day he is really committed to learning and improving and giving his best.

“He’s a credit to the club, his family and the academy. When he came on with his other two appearances he didn’t have family at the game.

“He was surprised as they were only short appearances. But his mum and dad were here to see him. He got a nice ovation when he went off and I think it was thoroughly deserved.”

Clement on Sam Walker’s performance

“I can’t say enough about the goalkeeping department at the moment and what they are dealing with. They are supporting each other really well and I have three first-team goalkeepers.”

Clement on Yakou Meite’s injury

“He’s hurt his ankle but I don’t know the severity. It’s not bad because he could carry on but he had to come off. He was really disappointed because he scored a valuable goal for us.”

Clement on Modou Barrow

“He did well - most of the game he played on the right and I quite liked him there. It gives him more freedom to come inside.”

Clement on the fans

“The fans are really fair and honest. If they see their team not doing well then they’ll let them know.

“They are patient as well - they don’t get on the players’ backs straight away. And if they see the team giving everything then the fans will get behind them. They were great.”

Clement on our upcoming fixture with Ipswich

“Ipswich got a draw today but they’re five points behind us. It’s early in the season but it’s like an early six-pointer. If you win the game, you go eight points clear of bottom.

“And while our position in the table hasn’t changed today, it’s all condensed a little bit with the teams above us. That’s what you want - you don’t want to be cut adrift.

“Now we need to start to put a run of results and performances together. And all the focus is on next weekend now.”

A sparsely populated Madejski Stadium | Simeon Pickup

A third home league win of the season eased the pressure on Paul Clement, but how did the players perform?

Sam Walker: 6

Not at fault for either of Bristol City’s goals, and put in some key saves in both halves to keep Reading in the game. Should command his area more dominantly, but that will improve come with a run of starts.

Andy Yiadom: 6

Didn’t get forward as much as usual but did the defensive side of his job well enough in the second half, although he could have been more imposing in the build-up to City’s second, with the ball twice going over from his side into the danger area.

Liam Moore: 7

Lost Pack for the first equaliser and should have been more decisive in clearing Reading’s lines for the second. On the whole though he was typically strong and committed which paid off in the second half when City pushed forward for a goal.

John O’Shea: 7

The king of ‘standing in the right place and heading the ball away’, O’Shea is the perfect centre back to have in the defence when the opposition are throwing the kitchen sink at you in search of a goal. Wasn’t exposed for pace and made his experience show to help Reading see out the game.

Tyler Blackett: 5

An inconsistent afternoon for Blackett who had some great moments - like a first half balletic spin on the ball that left a Bristol City player completely bamboozled - but also some some sloppier ones, and was beaten at the far post for City’s second too easily.

Liam Kelly: 7

Fantastic goal at the end of the first half to (briefly) restore Reading’s lead, firing a rocket into the top corner from the edge of the box. Overall he was given a different role in the team, anchoring the midfield in the continued absence of Saeid Ezatolahi and David Meyler.

Although he obviously lacks their strength and aerial presence, he was tenacious in the tackle. He also seemed to use the ball better than usual, finding space more easily in deeper areas, so it’s worth keeping him here for the Ipswich Town match to see if he can keep it up.

Andy Rinomhota: 7

A really mature, composed performance from the young midfielder whose debut has been a long time coming. Won the ball back well a few times and kept things simple - nothing too complicated but did his job effectively and should start against Ipswich Town.

Leandro Bacuna: 7

Came up with the game’s crucial goal, slamming home midway through the second half to push Reading back in front. Generally speaking though, he was his usual hotheaded self, giving Reading energy in the middle of the park and driving forward well, but also letting himself down a few times with poor decision making.

Bacuna messed up a two-on-one after winning the ball back in a dangerous area, got into a silly bit of fisticuffs in the second half, and was guilty a few times of sloppy control that put his team under pressure. On the whole, he offered the side a lot more in an advanced role than when he’s been deployed deeper.

Sam Baldock: 5

A difficult afternoon for Baldock who had to work hard up top on his own for much of the match, without much service from his teammates. Also didn’t get much joy out of Webster and Kalas who gobbled up most aerial balls that came their way. Dived in recklessly in the build-up for the first equaliser.

Yakou Meite: 7

Taken off injured in the first half after going down a few times, but had been bright until then. Opened the scoring for Reading with a instinctive finish on eight minutes, and worked hard to hold the ball up for others.

Modou Barrow: 5

Didn’t look as sharp as he has done previously, and didn’t stretch the Bristol City defence with his pace as you’d like him to do. Nonetheless, he earned another assist with a clever pull-back that Bacuna converted for 3-2.

Subs

Garath McCleary: 6

Across the game he played in three different positions: left wing just after coming on for Yakou Meite in the first, right wing whenever he swapped with Modou Barrow, and up front alongside Sam Baldock when Reading went 3-5-2 late on.

Although he didn’t create too much in open play, he pushed Reading up the pitch on the counter in the second half, and his hard work as an auxiliary striker in the closing stages was vital in protecting the home side’s lead.

John Swift: 5

Replaced Andy Rinomhota to give Reading fresh legs in the midfield. Didn’t offer much in the final third, but did the important job: keeping the ball well enough when it came to him.

Chris Gunter: N/A

Brought on for Modou Barrow and went to left wing-back so that Reading could play a 5-3-2 in the closing stages. No scares, and won a corner out of nothing through determination, eating up valuable time. Came on too late to be given a grade.
