The wind and rain more than played its part on Saturday afternoon as the Royals put in another solid defensive display under Jose Gomes.

A miserable afternoon in Stoke on Trent produced a pretty miserable game, as neither Stoke nor Reading were able to play the football they would’ve liked to. Both teams threatened at stages - probably more so the home team - but it was the two sets of defences who prevailed.

Tom Ince and Sam Vokes both hit the woodwork early on for the Potters, while Garath McCleary and Modou Barrow both missed golden opportunities for Reading in the second half. So, all in all, a draw was probably the fair result.

The important thing is that we’re still hovering above the relegation zone, and it’s another clean sheet as we continue to be a much harder team to beat under Jose Gomes. Of course, there were some talking points that got the fans talking on social media after the game...

First start for Michael Olise

One big positive under Gomes - among many - has been his faith in the academy players, and it was the same again on Saturday as Michael Olise was given his first start after coming off the bench against Leeds midweek.

There is nothing the fans like to see more than an academy product coming through the ranks and making a name for themselves in the first team - just ask Andy Rinomhota.

Obviously, they have to be good enough, but we have a good academy system that will produce good players. They just have to have trust put in them, and that’s exactly what Gomes is doing. It was a great moment for the 17-year-old, and hopefully he has many more appearances to come in a Reading shirt...

Another clean sheet

There is no doubt that we are a much, much harder to team to beat under Gomes. Liam Moore and Matt Miazga have formed a very important partnership, and they were both brilliant again on Saturday.

With the wonderful Martinez in goal behind them, and Andy Yiadom and Tyler Blackett now the first choice full-backs, we have found consistency at a very key point in the season.

The conditions on Saturday would’ve made it hard for any defence, but the Reading back four dealt with the wind and rain brilliantly. Credit has to go to Gomes as well, as we have now kept as many clean sheets under him as we did during Clement’s entire reign as manager - five.

The fans were certainly impressed with the defensive performance, and quite rightly so...

Oliveira injury blow

Everyone at the game was probably solely focused on getting out of Stoke and back home after a scrappy game, and miserable weather conditions - until Jose Gomes underwent his post-match media duties and dropped a huge bombshell.

Nelson Oliveira could be out for the rest of the season. That is seriously a huge blow to our chances at staying up.

The Portuguese striker added quality to our team that we haven’t had in a very long time. He’s going to be a massive miss, and huge responsibility how rests on Yakou Meite and Danny Loader who will be the ones given the task of filling the void.

It was news that has seriously worried the Reading faithful, and understandably so. It really has raised the question, where are the goals going to come from?

Conclusion

A solid point and an important clean sheet, but really gutting news regarding Oliveira. He is going to be a massive loss. We also need Rinomhota back as soon as possible as well, as we are a much better team with him in the side.

Rest up in the next two weeks, and get down the Mad Stad to back the boys against Preston North End on the 30th.

The Royals went into the international break on the back of a point and clean sheet at Stoke City.

I can imagine if you’d gone to Stoke City on Saturday and it was your first football match, you wouldn’t be in a hurry to attend another game. The rain was awful, the wind was unforgiving (I’m surprised the corner flag survived the match) and the football was far from entertaining.

We rode our luck early on when Stoke hit the woodwork twice. They certainly had the better of the chances and if anyone was going to score, they probably looked more likely to. They attacked with much more meaning and speed than we did. It was still so glaringly obvious that we are seriously missing something special up front, and it was a shame that Yakou Meite didn’t create anything.

Don’t get me wrong, the performance wasn’t horrific, and a point away from home is great. Any point we can get at this stage of the season is good; I just felt like it was a winnable game. I believe that, had the likes of Nelson Oliveira, Andy Rinomhota, Sam Baldock etc had been playing, Saturday’s result could have been very different.

On the plus side, we kept a clean sheet, Emi Martinez yet again making a seemingly impossible save from point-blank range. We defended very, very well. Liam Moore and Matt Miagza really seem to have built a good partnership, which is going to be vital in the last eight games. Some of the tackles and blocks that were put in were fantastically timed; it seemed like players were really prepared to put themselves on the line and grind out any result we could.

Although we are still riddled with injuries, some of our midfield performed impressively against a notoriously physical Stoke side. Although John Swift was slightly frustrating, Lewis Baker had a very controlled performance, and kept calm on the ball when he was put under pressure. It’s taken him a couple of games, but he’s really starting to make an impact. Michael Olise also gave a very respectable performance in his first senior start for the Royals.

Saturday didn’t match the feeling after the Wigan game, but I’ve definitely felt a lot more disappointed and annoyed at times this season. Overall I’d say it was a solid point and certainly one gained rather than two lost.

I still can’t tell how our season is going to go. My nerves are already through the roof thinking about this battle going to the final day. One day I think we’ll be fine, the next my gut is telling me something completely different. Let’s hope some of injured players can come back after the international break.

The Portuguese discussed the ongoing relegation battle after a windy day at the bet365 Stadium.

Another point on the board in our fight against relegation. It wasn’t an easy game against Stoke City, but we managed to take a point back to the Madejski to keep us out the bottom three.

The conditions in Stoke were difficult, and I’m sure many fans would have taken a point at the start of the game, but we could have picked up all three points at the end had Garath McCleary not missed a good chance late on.

We now go into the international break in 21st position, one point ahead of Rotherham in 22nd, but only two points off Wigan in 19th. It’s certainly going to be a stressful end to the season!

Here is what Jose Gomes had to say after the game, speaking to both the official club website and Football.London.

Gomes on the conditions

“There was a strong wind and the ball was moving without anyone even touching it – these are tough conditions to play in.

“We talked about it before the game. My opinion was to play the first half with the wind behind us because sometimes the wind can stop in the second half.

“But the players knew the wind wouldn’t stop and they preferred to play with it in the second half.”

Gomes on the performance

“We didn’t perform well, and Stoke didn’t perform well. It was not a beautiful game. But it was the type of game that you can expect in these kind of conditions.

“At the beginning they could have scored; at the end we could have scored. It is a fair result. For sure this point will be important for our position in the table at the end of the season.

“In the position that we’re in, every point is good. We need a lot of points before we will feel really safe in the table, so the fight will go on.

“From our side, it was a game that we could not afford to lose. Sometimes that spirit damaged the quality of our offensive movements. But we tried to win the challenges and we won most of them.

“It was very important to get through those early stages – if we had conceded it would have been difficult to turn the result around.”

Gomes on the clean sheet

“It was important to get a clean sheet again. We tried to achieve the three points to win the game but it was a difficult fixture. It was important that we achieved at least a point today.”

Gomes on picking up a point

“We are more disappointed than happy, because we want to get away from danger as quickly as possible. We know that if we draw all the games we have left, that might not be enough – so we need to win.”

Gomes on Andy Yiadom playing in midfield

“It’s an option - like we have other options. He is a very good defender - he’s fast and strong. During the first half we didn’t control some balls in that zone so there were a lot of aerial challenges and we lost the ball when we tried to recover it.

“With Yiadom in that position the team felt more protected in that zone, I think.

“We didn’t play a beautiful game but we played one which was possible under the conditions.”

Gomes on Michael Olise’s first start

“He trained very well and showed me during training we can use his talent. He started a bit nervous but that’s normal.

“He grew into the game and just before I changed him had did a very good offensive action where he beat two or three players and then was fouled, I think.

“He is a talented player and we must help to use him in the best way we can with his technical ability.”

Gomes on the relegation fight

“The fight has not finished and it will go on. It hasn’t finished for Wigan either so we need to keep working and prepare for the next game.

“It will be difficult for all the teams (the rest of the season) but we need to win games. If we draw all the games until the end it will not be enough.”

Here’s how Becka graded the Royals after their stalemate in Staffordshire.

Emiliano Martinez: 6

A solid performance which was made tricky by the weather. Made another impressive save in the second half to keep the scores level.

Andy Yiadom: 6

Started off in his usual right-back role and moved into midfield during the second half. Effective in both positions, but really offered some attacking threat when he was down the right.

Liam Moore: 7

Looked strong and confident, and put in one of the best tackles I’ve seen in a while to stop a threatening Stoke attack.

Matt Miazga: 7

His partnership with Moore seems to be going from strength to strength. He looked in control, won most battles in the air, and stayed resilient throughout.

Tyler Blackett: 6

Made some great blocks and was defensively impressive throughout the game. He was maybe lacking a little bit when we were attacking.

Lewis Baker: 7

A clever game in midfield from Baker. He looked in control when he was on the ball, and made some excellent cross field passes.

Michael Olise: 5

A good first start for the academy midfielder. I was worried that he would get a little lost amongst a powerful Stoke midfield, but he held his own and got himself into some decent positions.

John Swift: 4

A sloppy performance from Swift. Lost the ball on numerous occasions, and wasted the chances he was given at goal. Frustrating to watch.

A quick recap of today’s goings-on at the Bet 365 Stadium.

Reading ground out a solid 0-0 draw at Stoke City today, keeping themselves just outside the relegation zone. Chances were at a premium for both sides in a low-quality match, with the wind preventing either side from exerting influence on proceedings.

The afternoon started with Reading making two changes; Callum Harriott and Michael Olise coming in for Modou Barrow and Ryan East. That meant full-debutant Olise replacing Ryan East, who’d made his first start for the club in midweek against Leeds United.

Otherwise, the teamsheet read: Martinez; Yiadom, Miazga, Moore, Blackett; Swift, Baker; McCleary, Olise, Harriott; Meite. Subs: Walker, Gunter, McShane, O’Shea, East, Barrow, Loader.

First half

The game started out badly for Reading, as we could well have been a few goals down in the opening stages. Stoke City twice hit the woodwork early on - first through Tom Ince, then through Sam Vokes - but couldn’t find a way past Emiliano Martinez.

Reading would grow into the contest as the match went on but, with the exception of a few half chances that came down the right (Harriott’s side), we didn’t create too much. We struggled to control the match, which was in large part due to a lack of physical presence in the middle and quality up top.

The wind also played a part a few times, with Harriott needing three attempts to take a corner at one point.

Second half

The game wasn’t much better after the break in terms of quality, with few chances at either end, although John Swift would see a left-footed volley go just over.

There was an interesting tactical change during the half though, with Harriott and Olise withdrawn for Barrow and Gunter. That meant Yiadom coming into the midfield, effectively giving Reading an energetic ball winner and pushing Swift higher up the pitch.

It didn’t have a particularly big impact on the flow of the game though, with the game slowly grinding towards a 0-0. Perhaps the best opportunity for us came right at the end, with Garath McCleary driving forwards and firing just past the far post.

Summary

To me, a decent draw and clean sheet away from home. Reading probably would have lost this a few months ago, but are now able to pick up decent points here and there to keep us ticking over.

We go into the international break just above the bottom three, with key players hopefully set to return from injury. Keep the faith!

It’s the Royals’ first Championship visit to the Potters since 2005.

After Tuesday’s disappointing result against Leeds, Reading must pick themselves up away from home against Stoke City. The Royals will be looking nervously over their shoulders again as Rotherham and Wigan are now back level on points, adding pressure on Jose Gomes’ side. Stoke sit ten points above Reading in a comfortable 17th place, but it has been a disappointing season for the Potters who were tipped to go up at the start of the season.

Can Reading win back to back away games or will the Leeds defeat still be playing on their minds?

Reading

Form (all competitions): LWWDL

Ovie Ejaria could miss the game through injury after also being sidelined for Tuesday’s 3-0 thumping by Leeds. Youngster Ryan East, who made his debut in midfield against the Whites, will likely remain in the first XI if the Liverpool loanee remains out. With Liam Kelly not being favoured by Jose Gomes, East will be hoping to stake a claim for a permanent starting spot. Liam Moore played through the pain against Leeds after dislocating his shoulder against Wigan last Saturday, but still looks nailed on to start and captain the side. Therefore, it can be assumed that Gomes will pick the same 11 who played against Leeds on Tuesday.

If the video that the club produced for Red Nose Day is anything to go by, Andy Rinomhota is making good progress in the gym without his protective boot. The midfielder will most likely be rested, continuing his recovery with Nelson Oliveira, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Sam Baldock in the treatment room.

His strike partner Sam Vokes looks set to play after being assessed for a groin problem earlier in the week along with midfielder Peter Etebo.

Midfielder Sam Clucas is banned for this match as he begins a three game suspension. Royals legend Adam Federici is set to be on the bench acting as deputy for Jack Butland. The Australian spent a decade at Reading and was part of the Championship winning side in 2011/12.

Stoke come into this game having very little to play for, with their early promotion hopes having long faded. While they only sit 10 points ahead of the Royals, there is little fear of them being sucked into a late relegation battle. Despite having Premier League level players in their squad such as Tom Ince and Afobe, the Potters are the fourth lowest goal scorers in the league. However, they do have a good defensive record with 16 clean sheets this season thanks to a centre-back pairing of Ryan Shawcross and January signing Danny Batth. Whilst they may have nothing to play for, Nathan Jones’ side will be looking to build momentum as they aim to challenge for the title next year.

The Royals haven’t visited the bet365 Stadium (formerly the Britannia Stadium) in the Championship since 2005. Reading won 1-0 through a Dave Kitson strike.

Stoke have scored only seven goals since Nathan Jones took over in the middle of January. No Championship side have scored fewer in that period.

Reading are yet to win back to back games away from home this season, and haven’t done so since midway through 2016/17 when they claimed victory at Blackburn Rovers and then Bristol City.

Prediction

On paper, Stoke have a squad capable of comfortably beating Reading. But the Championship’s gruelling fixture list has drained their confidence and fitness. Reading travel to Staffordshire with everything to play for as their relegation rivals have clawed back level on points. I can see this being a very edgy game but the Royals could come out on top with a slim goal margin if they convert the few chances Stoke will allow them. Lose however, and they could find themselves in the bottom three by Saturday evening.

With pacey wingers and experienced midfielders, Nathan Jones’ side can bother the Royals on Saturday

It has been a rather disappointing first season in the second tier for Nathan Jones’ Stoke City, and they will be hoping for a win against the Royals this weekend to distance themselves from the bottom three.

They currently sit 10 points and five places above the relegation zone, but a few bad results and they could quite easily be involved in the relegation fight. They come into the game on the back of two consecutive 0-0 draws and will be confident of keeping a clean sheet against the Royals, but may struggle to score themselves (especially without the injured Benik Afobe).

Scoring has been a major issue for the Potters this season, and they only average 1 goal per game so far this season, which ranks them at 21st of all the teams in the division. The Royals rank two places above them with an average of 1.1.

The previously mentioned Afobe has top scored so far for Stoke and Welsh midfielder Joe Allen sits in second place with 6. The Potters also average 10.9 shots per game, which shows how inaccurate their shooting is, however the Royals simply can not rely on this and, if allowed too many chances, have the potential to punish us.

The person who will be creating a lot of those chances will be Welshman, Joe Allen. The former Liverpool man has chipped in with six goals and four assists so far this campaign and has a pass success percentage of 83.3%. He will be the man that The Potters will be hoping to pull the strings in the centre of the park on Saturday.

Irishman James McClean has the most assists for Stoke so far this season and he will be a massive threat out on the wings. Royals full backs Andy Yiadom and Tyler Blackett will be in for a long afternoon with the former mentioned McClean and Tom Ince running at them.

Time for my prediction. I would love to be positive and go for a Reading win, but I just can’t see it I’m afraid. I think it will be 1-0 to Stoke. The Leeds defeat on Tuesday could have knocked the stuffing out of the Royals a bit and (hopefully I’m wrong) I think that the players may have been brought down to earth after their last-minute heroics of the last two weekends.

But hopefully I am wrong and they go and get another massive three points.

The Royals travel to Staffordshire before the international break.

Reading will be looking to bounce back from Tuesday night’s 3-0 defeat to Leeds when they travel to Stoke City on Saturday - the Potters being the lowest ranked side that we have left to play. With that in mind, in our Weekend Preview podcast, Olly Allen and the Wokingham Paper’s Tom Crocker discuss the Royals’ chances at the bet365 Stadium, the role that academy players could play and how to solve the seemingly never-ending midfield issue. As always, we also get the opposition view, and this week we’re joined by Stoke fan David Cowlishaw from the Wizards of Drivel podcast.
