Were all Reading fans unanimous in their dismay at a late goal stealing away their first win? Were Sheffield Wednesday fans magnanimous in accepting the visitors were the better side? Here we find out with Dave's alternative view of the game.

There is no doubt that in this day and age Social Media plays an active part in everyone's life - football is no exception and is a vehicle for fans to be ecstatic, a bit meh and also to breath a sigh of relief. From the social part this week, there are a number of main themes running through the Sheffield Wednesdays fans. These being ticket prices, the poor performance of their team and also a massive sigh of relief in getting a point.

So ladies and gentlemen without further ado, the Social Side

We will start with one of the main early talking points within the Owls fans that being the ticket prices, it seems that his has caused a little bit of a concern and a few raised eyebrows charging the home fans £33 for the game.

It seems that this season it's not only Reading fans who are massively frustrated by their team. After tonight's performance the Owls fans where all equal in their opinion of their team; the main difference between Reading and Sheffield is that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and arguably should have seven points on the board. This is their reaction to the performance and their realisation that they got lucky tonight.

Looking at the reports from the Media, Sky Sports carry a fairly comprehensive report on the game, with a nice video highlights package, and how really we should have sown up the three points. Must be said though there are two cracking passes from HRK and Sa for the Williams goal.

The Daily Mail, also have a good write up and photos as well, labelling the game a "nondescript event," however they do say that the draw was totally undeserved. An interesting side line from the DM is also the story that both Sheffield Wednesday and Reading have Thai owners, and the two sons which "run" the clubs call themselves "brothers", There's probably nothing in it but the article is worth a read!

In true style as soon as Williams scores a goal or has a good game then the American outlets pick it up as this one from SBI shows, flying the flag for his inclusion in the US MNT (love the way they have to put Men's National Team as an abbreviation) in the upcoming games against Peru and Brazil. That could me an interesting match up if his now team-mate Paolo Hurtardo gets a call up!

The BBC also follow the same vein as everyone else, however once again the shots on/shots off totals making frustrating reading with Reading having 15/3 and Sheffield 4/2, which pretty much outlines that it was a poor night for the Owls and a draw is a bonus. For Reading fans, the worrying thing however is that this stat for the season now reads: 44 shots, 11 on target, two goals. At best, that is a pants return for that amount of chances made.

Normally the Official Reading website steers clear of controversy etc, however the title tonight of "Royals Robbed" on the gallery is for them a little "wow" and I can only think that they are as frustrated as we are! Their match report is up there and also worth a read.

Of the local news outlets; the Sheffield Star gives a fair write up to the game, which for a local outlet is rare. They comment on our well marshalled defence and call McShane "Outstanding" whereas GetReading has a quick summary but lead with the headline "Bond Howler". Although that makes a good headline, I have no doubt that Bond will save us more than he costs us this season.

Well that's me done for this week. I'll be back on Sunday with the reaction on social media and the news outlets for the <strike>Wimbledon</strike> MK Dons game.

Find out why Reading manager Steve Clarke was happy with his team's performance at Sheffield Wednesday and what he had to say on the mistake that cost them the win.

It was an evening of a good performance and a frustrating result after the Royals conceded a late equaliser against Sheffield Wednesday last night.

Danny Williams scored early in the second half for us to take the lead, but a mistake from Jonathan Bond right at the death meant that it was honours even at Hillsborough.

Steve Clarke was pleased with the performance and that he believes our first win is just around the corner, he told the Official Club website, "It was another very good performance.

"I've just said to them at the end of the game, that if they perform like that we'll be at the right end of the table come May.

"The team looks good, the shape looks good, we bossed the game from almost start to finish. We were really unlucky. And I think the reaction from their coaching staff, saying they'd robbed us a little bit, tells you everything.

"We were solid at the back as a four. The midfield four in front of them were doing their jobs properly, denying the opposition space. The front two worked ever so hard tonight. This is the platform you need to win matches. And trust me the wins will come."

Clarke also spoke about Bond after his error and how he is not worried with our start to the season, he added: "One mistake can punish you at any level,

"It was a big mistake at the end that cost us three points. But over the course of the season, your goalkeeper will make mistakes. It has happened before, it will happen again. Goalkeepers will always make mistakes and normally, when they do, it leads to a goal or a big incident.

"Jonathan's a young boy, who has got to learn to get those mistakes out of his game. I'm sure that throughout this season, he'll make saves and win us games to earn those points back. This is the life of a goalkeeper.

"And there's no point looking back, saying 'what if'. If the performances were poor and we weren't doing enough in matches, I'd be worried. I'm not worried.

"I look at the team and I see a good team. I didn't always see that last season. They know what they're doing, they know what they're trying to do, we just need a little break - and if we get a break I think we can go on a good winning run.

"Every match we've played this season, we've played well. We're not getting the rub of the green at the moment. But if that performance level stays the same we'll start to pick up three points rather than one."

The Royals were minutes away from victory at Hillsborough last night. See Chris Best's player ratings to find out which players excelled and which players failed.

Jonathan Bond: 4

Had he not made the catastrophic error then he probably would have been a solid 6. Still looked nervy when kicking. You worry what that mistake will do for his confidence.

Chris Gunter: 6

Pretty quiet, solid but rarely tested. Slightly disappointed that he didn't get as forward as I would have liked.

Paul McShane: 8

Very solid and vocal. Won a number of headers and marshalled the defence well, can't be blamed for the goal.

Anton Ferdinand: 7

Less visible than his central defensive partner but very solid as he snuffed out the limited Wednesday attacks.

Andrew Taylor: 6

One great tackle in the second half and a little more adventurous than Gunter but nothing to write home about.

Oliver Norwood: 6

Not a poor display but certainly not his best in a Reading shirt. Some great corners in the second half but a little wasteful with free kicks and guilty of dropping deeper in the last ten minutes.

Aaron Tshibola: 6

Broke up play well but also guilty of giving the ball away too often. Lucky to not have been shown second yellow card after a reckless shoulder barge.

Danny Williams: 7

Took his goal well and was really impressive for 20 minutes in the second half, although less effective out wide right. Drove forward and started many attacks but still gave the ball away far too often.

Stephen Quinn: 7

Impressive second half performance with some neat link up play. Not at his best on the left wing but certainly worked hard.

Hal Robson Kanu: 7

Worked hard and held the ball up well, probably not the answer in the number 10 role for the royals but put in a decent shift.

Orlando Sa: 8

My man of the match, but he needs a goal. His performance had everything else in it, powerful and strong with a good assist for the goal. Reading struggled when he was withdrawn.

Subs

Jordan Obita: 5

A few runs down the left wing but no real impact on the game.

Nick Blackman: N/A

Cut a lonely figure up front and was forced to chase long balls smashed up to him

Michael Hector: N/A

An unnecessary change when the Royals were in control - no errors made but his presence contributed to the deep nature of Reading's defence at the death.

The third game of the league season saw Reading denied at the death by a last-gasp Wednesday equaliser. Here's Chris Best's match report from the trip to Hillsborough.

After battling through roadworks and endless traffic jams, a hearty band of Royals fans eventually made it to Hillsborough and settled down to watch Wednesday on Wednesday and most significantly see if the Royals' season could get a well needed boost. After a dull draw with Leeds we called for width. The sight of Tarique Fosu on the bench raised some spirits, but if anything Reading set up even more narrowly than Sunday as Steve Clarke opted for two changes, Andrew Taylor possibly surprisingly replacing Jordan Obita at left back and Aaron Tshibola starting in place of Nick Blackman - allowing Reading a midfield diamond with Orlando Sa and Hal Robson-Kanu up front. Still no wingers to be seen.

First Half

Reading, looking striking in their African Violet, settled into the game much quicker than their hosts and although chances were few and far between in the first 20 minutes, the Royals controlled possession and won a number of free kicks - the most notable resulted in a rasping shot from Ollie Norwood which flashed wide of the post. It seemed as if the Royals were continuing as they left off from Sunday, neat triangles in the middle but no threat of an end product. Although differently to the Madejski on Sunday the 4-4-2 formation was certainly giving a little more support to Sa, who looked strong in holding up play and even Robson Kanu's movement and link up with the midfield showed signs of encouragement. But still no chances.

As the half wore on, the midfield resembled similar congestion to the M69 with occasional bursts forward from Danny Williams seemingly Reading's best chance of a breakthrough. But as has been said so many times in the Clarke era still no chances created and this infamous lack of width, so talked about already this season, was obvious for all to see. However, whilst Reading huffed and puffed with a handful of corners resulting in very little at one end the other was rarely tested, a few long balls into the box snuffed out by the impressive McShane.

The only blip on a fine defensive first half performance was a poor clearance from goalkeeper Bond which Wednesday were unable to capitalise on. As the half drew to a close the loudest reaction from the crowd came in a chorus of groans when the fourth official raised 2 minutes of injury time to be played. Nonetheless, the referee eventually put the crowd out of their misery and blew for half time. A poor first 45 just shaded by the away side but without testing Lewis Price in the Wednesday goal.

Second Half

Clearly Steve Clarke could not have been happy with his side's first half performance and his charges came out all guns blazing. It took just a minute into the second period for Sa to force a save from Price, who parried straight to Robson-Kanu who should have done better than smashing the rebound over the bar. One of those nights? It certainly seemed that it might be the case, but Reading kept pressing and got their reward almost immediately after as neat play between Robson-Kanu and his strike partner saw the Portuguese striker power his way into the box and find Danny Williams at the back post who, unmarked, smashed the ball beyond the helpless Price. A good finish and some neat play from Sa and Robson-Kanu in the build-up. Also, evidence of the need of width - Williams not a natural winger had ghosted to the back post alone and had finally given something for the travelling faithful to cheer. The goal seemed just what the doctor ordered as confidence seared through the away side. Waves of attacks followed as Sa should have done better with a free header a few moments later and Norwood had another free kick saved. Nonetheless it was all one way and if anyone was to score again it must be the royals.

As with the first half, Reading looked more than comfortable defensively, McShane in particular marshalled the back line extremely well, but both Taylor and Ferdinand made good challenges to snuff out limited Wednesday forays. Although it was just a one goal lead most of the travelling support seemed very comfortable as Wednesday had still yet to test Bond with anything other than crosses pumped into the box. Despite this solidity, Reading began to sink deeper and deeper towards their own goal and one might question the curious substitutions made by Clarke as the half wore on. Obita's replacement of Taylor was fairly unsurprising but the decision to replace both Sa and Robson-Kanu on 80 minutes with Hector and Blackman did raise a few eyebrows.

Almost immediately Reading stopped doing what they had done so well in the first 30 minutes of the second half and instead of stroking the ball around neatly in midfield and bringing the strikers into play, they began to panic and seemed intent on seeing out the remainder of the game by smashing long balls to the isolated Blackman. More and more pressure fell on the Reading goal and the inevitable came in the 90th minute when Bond came a mile off his line to drop the ball at the feet of Modou Sougou who promptly accepted the gift and scored with Wednesday's first shot on target. Royals deflated and Wednesday rampant. The home side sensed a winner but despite a couple of speculative balls into the box didn't test the keeper again as the game finished an extremely disappointing 1-1 draw.

Final Thoughts

Frankly, a bitter pill to swallow. Without a doubt this was two points dropped for Reading in a result which feels much more like a defeat that a draw. You have to feel that this was damaging to Royals and Steve Clarke in a number of ways; does he still have faith in his keeper? Does he have too many central midfielders? When will we get a win? Jonathan Bond will take the blame for the goal as it was an odd decision for him to come so far to claim a ball that wasn't his. However, Reading were absolutely cruising before that mistake and Clarke's negative substitutions stifled Reading's flow and forced them to drop further and further back. On the positives, Sa and Robson-Kanu linked up well in the second half and there must have been a combined sigh of relief from the Sheffield Wednesday back four when they were both withdrawn.

Clarke also shouldn't feel compelled to bring Michael Hector on if he doesn't start - although a very promising talent Hector's introduction changed the shape of the team and forced much more pressure on the back five. Maybe this is a tad unfair but it seemed that he was being ‘fitted in' rather than this being a necessary tactical move. Ultimately, Wednesday will be delighted to have nicked a point and Reading will be hugely deflated. We all hope that the likes of McCleary, Hurtado, Fernandez and Pogrebnyak will help to remedy a lack of end product and their return to first team action cannot come soon enough. However, immaterial of all this, there will be few games this season where Reading will be so untested for 90 minutes to not take all 3 points. I just hope that we don't look back and wish we had two more points at the end of the season. Absolutely criminal.

Reading were mere seconds away from recording a first Championship win of the season only for a late goalkeeping clanger to deny them at Hillsborough. Here's our initial reaction.

Reading: Bond; Taylor (Obita), Ferdinand, McShane, Gunter; Tshibola, Norwood, Williams, Quinn; Robson-Kanu (Hector), Sa (Blackman)

Steve Clarke made two changes coming into the game, with Jordan Obita and Nick Blackman dropping to the bench in favour of Andrew Taylor and Aaron Tshibola. Those moves gave Hal Robson-Kanu the chance to play up front, with Stephen Quinn moved out wide for Tshibola.

Much like the Leeds game there was little to report in the first period, with a booking for Tshibola and a Gunter snap shot the only meaningful action. Wednesday lost their captain Glen Loovens before the break due to injury but you'd have forgiven those at Hillsborough for falling asleep during a 45 minutes that saw just one shot on target.

However it took just four minutes of the second-half for Reading to inject some life into the contest as a determined run from Orlando Sa into the penalty area ended with a poke into the path of Danny Williams who fired it past Price to give the Royals a 1-0 lead.

Reading had won each of the four previous times that Williams had found the net and Wednesday barely looked like getting back into the game thanks to some solid work by the Reading midfield and defence. In fact Wednesday failed to register another shot on target until the very last minute but sadly that effort would prove costly indeed for the Royals.

Jonathan Bond had received lukewarm reactions to his first few games as Reading's number one but the goalkeeper did himself no favours with a costly error to gift Wednesday an equaliser. A hopeful long punt drifted high into the Reading box but Bond misjudged the flight, failed to catch cleanly and spilled it straight into the path of Modou Sougou who slotted into an open goal. It was a crushing blow as Reading had seemed utterly comfortable against a blunt Owls attack and were well worth the three points.

Looking at the bigger picture and while scoring goals is still an issue, the fact that we were a goalkeeping clanger away from three consecutive clean sheets is encouraging and bodes well for the future. With attacking reinforcements to come in the form of Paolo Hurtado, Alex Fernandez, Garath McCleary and Tariqe Fosu, Clarke has got the makings of some solid foundations at the club but that win needs to come sooner rather than later.

We'll have a full report and player ratings up tomorrow so stay tuned for those right here on The Tilehurst End.

It was a winning weekend for bookie watch against Leeds, can Readingfanman continue his good run as he previews all the best odds for Reading FC's trip to Sheffield Wednesday.

After a goalless draw on Sunday, we move into midweek - and we have the away match at Wednesday, on Wednesday coming up this week for the Royals in their 3rd league game. A loss would constitute a poor start for Reading, with only 1 point from an available 9, however a win would see doubters hushed for a short while before the arrival of MK Dons on Saturday at the Madejski.

Bookie Watch had a solid weekend, with both the 0-0 HT score line at 7/4 and also the Reading to score less than 2 goals at 7/10 bet coming in for us giving us a solid profit on the weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday come into the game having played a home game against Bristol City to open the season, with a 2-0 win, followed up by a defeat in the league on Saturday against Ipswich at Portman Road 2-1. These were interspersed by a solid 4-1 home win against Mansfield in the League Cup.

Sheffield Wednesday last season were extremely low scorers at Hillsborough only managing to score 16 goals all season. Despite this, they only conceded 20. With this in mind, and given the "negative" 4-2-3-1 that Reading lined up with on Sunday at home to Leeds, we may see another low scoring game, despite the 11 summer signings that Sheffield Wednesday have made so far. The under 2.5 option however has been covered off in most of the market, but a solid looking 8/11 is available at MarathonBet. With both sides lacking sorely in firepower, with Reading who still lack creativity going forwards so far this season, either side to win by 1 goal at 6/5 with Betway also looks like an interesting prospect.

It seems a tough ask that both teams will trouble the score sheet tonight as well. Reading are 9/2 to win to nil, and Sheffield Wednesday at 11/4 to win to nil, I feel that Reading offer good value for a counter attacking win at Hillsborough at this price, and the 9/2 at Skybet is worth taking for a small amount. If you are interested however in seeing Reading take the win, no matter what the score, they are available at 13/5, best odds available on Wednesday are at 11/8, with the draw being priced up at 12/5.

One last bet for the game is in the Corners market. So far, Reading have averaged 5 had 5 corners in their first match, and 5 corners in their second. Sheffield Wednesday have managed 7 in their first game, and then 8 away at Ipswich, and I think because of the impetus being on themselves tonight will probably pull away in the corners stat. They are 17/20 to have more corners taken than Reading tonight which I think is worth a bet on.

Recommended Bets

In charge tonight for Reading's trip to Hillsborough is PAUL TIERNEY. Olly has all the info on the Lancashire official...

Many Reading fans haven't been happy with refereeing performances so far this season, and it appears that the Football League may have heard your frustrations, as they have appointed a man with Premier League experience to take charge of our trip to Sheffield Wednesday – Paul Tierney.

It might only be two games worth of Premier League experience, but it’s still Premier League experience none the less, eh Paul?! He first took charge of a top flight game last August when Swansea beat West Brom 3-0, whilst the other fixture came on the opening day of this campaign as the Baggies travelled to newly promoted Watford in a 0-0 draw.

Tierney’s only other game so far this season was Portsmouth’s Capital One Cup tie with Derby, in which the South Coast side won 2-1 and booked a date with the Royals in the second round. In those two games he has taken charge of 2015-16, the Wigan born official has given just four yellow cards. So to get a better idea of what kind of ref he is, let’s look at his stats from 2014-15.

In the entirety of the campaign, Tierney took charge of 37 games in all competitions, handing out 134 yellows and eight reds. On top of that, he gave a generous 13 penalties, including two in one game.

He has previously taken charge of two Reading games, but I’m sorry to say we didn’t win either of them, with the most recent being a 3-0 defeat to Middlesbrough in December 2013. If it makes you feel any better, Sheffield Wednesday’s last game under him was a 7-0 loss to Manchester City in the League Cup last season.

But as we learn every week here on Ref-Watch, the referee’s past never affects the outcome of the game. In reality I’m just here to give you information on the official so you know who you're shouting at every game. But that won't happen this time will it Mr Tierney? Because you've got Premier League experience…
